The financially challenged bit got me!
We're a financially challenged Oz family. We can manage the pool, and the 5 bed house
on 600sq. m. close to schools, transport, river, 11km from Brisbane CBD. Coupla old
cars (one 1995, one 1983 antique), 3 kids under 10.
Acreage? we could afford it, it we wanted to make it a 45min commute instead of
20min.
Nanny? foooorget it! Had one for a while, but I calculated that after paying tax and
then the nanny from my full-time wage, I was doing 40hours for $50 - and a stranger
was bringing up my kids.
Then again, we recently spent a month in the UK visiting hubby's family, and it was
so nice having family around that we toyed with the idea of moving to the UK.......
A quick look at property prices and job ads brought us to the conclusion that we'd
end up in a 2bedroom terrace in a not particularly nice area with a postage stamp of
grass, and lots of grey views out the window.
It was OK visiting the relatives who had money, and spacious houses. I thought "I
could live here". Then we got to the house of the single mum
- and I just couldn't imagine us in a house that small. With windows closed and
heating on, I felt very claustrophobic. The kids rattled around, and you couldn't
just yell ''get outside you lot".
As that said 'single mum' relative said (and I agreed), it's a lot less depressing
being poor in the sunshine, with space around you. She would love to move to
Brisbane, but unfortunately can't without leaving her kids.

In todays overly political correct world, shouldn't that be "hectarage"?

We're hoping for at least no worse than what we have here with the bonus of some sunshine. At least then we can chuck the kids outside for free and not feel guilty that the snow is freezing them!!
Bye Ginny
