Another attack on the 457 Visa
#2
The Labor Party think they are on a winner here with the beat up on the 457 Visas and the catch cry 'Aussies first' for any jobs, regardless of whether firstly there are Aussies who are prepared to go where many of these jobs are located, and secondly whether the Aussies have the qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience needed. The Labor strategists are obviously working the Focus groups overtime. Ex Union official Brendan O'Connor as the temporary Minister for Immigration and Citizenship in the Gillard Government (his brother is Michael O'Connor the CFMEU National Secretary and the CFMEU are running hard on the 457 Visa scare campaign), is prepared to just blatently make figures up about alleged abuse and rorting of 457 visas by the evil employers, yet it is the Government department that he is supposed to be responsible for that approves and issues 457 visas. How could anybody ever trust anything that this Government says. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Indeed. Only 1 in 200 companies who take on 457's have been punished for misusing the 457 process.... but I would say that some companies I know, while sticking to the letter of the law, might not be sticking to its spirit.
Moving jobs offshore and laying people off, while still bringing in staff on 457's does stick in the craw a bit.

But lets be honest. In some places it is being abused. The 457 is designed to allow companies to find workers from abroad where that skill does not exist locally. It's hardly like the Dapto races needs a foreign worker to work o the bar.

It also needs to be overhauled.
But it's pretty much being used as an immigration stick by various politicians because it's an easy target - 457 holders don't have any voting rights and it's not hard to try and stir up a nation about 'those bloody foreigners, coming here, stealing our jobs' etc etc.

Of course it's being abused - probably all the visa systems are (you only have to look at the Immigration forum to see that)

The only shame being that it has taken Labor so long to take any action. This visa has been abused for years. Both from employers and employees using it as a cheap entry into Australia. Not at all what the visa was designed for.
Perhaps in better times it was not looked at closely enough. Now with employment difficulties becoming far more evident it has become increasing obvious it is not in Australia's interests for the ever increasing growth in that visa.

But, just playing devils advocate here, salaries in Oz have become extortionate. I know of at least two major mines in Oz that are under review of closure which if they were paying the same salaries as Canada, Europe or Asia would be profitable. So, can we blame the companies for trying to rebalance Oz excess.

That is rightly correct. The 457 is there for australia to fill a skills shortage. The 457 receipient also has the right to decline and not accept the peasant like conditions. It takes 2 to tango. BTW ...... other countries like the UK have an equivelent 457 too with other peasant like conditions. People still choose to take it up.
