Default Another AdelaideV'sPerth debate

Hi, This will be very boring, But due to leave early next year for Perth, but have now became very drawn to Adelaide. My wife doesn't want to work until our two girls start school(2008&09), so I will be sole earner, on around $80-$85. We want to build own house and feel we will be priced out of market in Perth. How crazy is the housing boom in Adelaide, I have seen lovely new 4&2's going for $210k-$250k, 30km from cbd. Wouldn't be able to afford that kind of nest in Perth. I have heard that Adelaide is a lovely city but a bit boring? Welcome any feedback. Told u it was boring

I've heard Perth is a lovely city but a bit boring also, so you'd have nothing to lose in either city.

Disclaimer: I've never been to Perth so can't judge, just reiterating what I have read on here and heard from fellow Aussies.

I've heard that also, but i have a few mates there whereas nil in Adelaide, just been reading another post about perth prices, and what you are getting for your money in Adailaide is far better. Anyway, i am a very handsome, charismatic, witty fellow and should have no bother making new buddies. Adelaide it is. Maybe?

hmmm

I cant really give you my preference.. having only lived in one of them, but i'll give my thoughts

Ive been to Perth... but chose to come to Adelaide ( not because it is nicer, but Adelaide was easier access to the other states, i like my weekends away)

I have always admitted that Perth was by far nicer, beaches far better.

But yes albeit Adelaide a bit boring to most... the house prices are affordable ( but bear in mind the cheap deals you see are either the not so nice areas or miles out of the city, and if south...the silly expressway is as much use as a chocolate fireguard)

Theres been a few interesting threads on Adelaidebrits recently asking the same question.. and there wasnt the usual biased answers you would expect.. lots of people would prefer to be in Perth . There is also an intersting one about relocating to other states, which seems to be happening a lot at the moment.

I like Adelaide.. but thats about it.. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.. but again I wouldnt not

Were looking to go to Brissie

I was born and raised in Perth, but lived in South Australia for a while before I emigrated to the UK in 2004. I'll be moving back to SA when I eventually go home, because most of my friends and relatives live there now.

I love both states (almost equally!) but for practical and personal reasons, I favour SA. My wife and I plan to buy a house in the Adelaide hills, where it is possible to find a nice place at a reasonable price in a beautiful semi-rural setting whilst still being no more than 10-15 km from Adelaide (as the crow flies.)

I don't believe that WA or SA are boring. The pace of life in SA is noticeably slower than the pace of life in WA, but that's not a bad thing.

There's plenty to do and see in both states.

We have been in Adelaide for 10 months now. We live in the North East suburb of Modbury North, this is approx 25 minute drive to the City but we have a bus route like a tram that goes around and gets you in in about 10-15 minutes.

We have a 5 bed, 2 lounge, 2 bathroom, study etc house which we paid $295,000 for in July last year. The market is fairly flat at the moment and there are plenty of places to buy. If you want to build you'll have to go very south, Aldinga Beach, Seaview Rise etc. You can still get lots up this way mawson Lakes is a nice new development, so is Northgate. I would suggest you look on www.realestate.com for some ideas of property prices. The closer to the city the more expensive, North Adelaide is expensive, so is Magill, Payneham, Norwood, Burnside. If you want the hills try looking at Blackwood, Stirling, Belaire, Aldgate, Handorf.

The North East is conveniently placed, its about 30 minutes to our local beach, 10 minute drive to the hills. Barossa Valley is roughly an hour away. There are plenty of shopping centres, a water park.
Try looking in these areas, Modbury, Modbury North, Redwood Park, Surrey Downs, Valley View, Para Hills, Gulfview Heights, Golden Grove, Tea Tree Gully
and Wynn Vale for starters. You can just put all these suburbs into the real estate website.

They say Adelaide is a place to live and its pretty good. Its clean, pretty and well laid out, very difficult to get lost. It has some culture if you like that sort of thing, lots of festivals and of course the V8 supercars every march. Happy hunting

I wouldn't base your decision solely on house prices, but also on whether you can get work easily in Perth v. Adelaide.

Have a look at the major internet job sites, and have a look where the recruitment agencies for your profession have offices.

It has been said on here that Adelaide hasn't got much going for it job-wise.

It's like in the UK: cheap house prices in Wales - but no jobs ...

As with everywhere it depends on the job. you wouldn't want to start a scuba diving business here!!

Actually there is a good range of houses and prices. To compare Adelaide to Wales isn't really very helpful.

If you are in a specialist field workwise then do your homework. My husband got an excellent job through an employment agency, it might have taken him months to find one as good going through the paper twice a week.

Anyone in Adelaide know the following?
What are the closest beachside suburbs to the CBD? whats the distance & peak hour commute time from them?
Are they popular Beach areas? Are any of them on a train line into the City?
Thx, Steve

True, nothing could compare to Perth could it Lynn

I was just interested in trying to find out a bit more about the place, as the only view I have of it is pretty negative because of comments friends/colleagues have mentioned.
But there's some pretty cheap realestate over there I just have no idea of what is where etc.
So I thought someone there or heading there might be able to point me in the right direction, but from the lack of response since yesterday afternoon, either nobody knows anything about the place, or what im trying to find doesnt exist but they dont want to admit it...

There are quite a few beachside suburbs within easy commute to the city. But it depends on what you want to pay and what you consider to be an acceptable commute. Glenelg-10mins to city lots of $$$ out to Aldinga Beach 1 hour about 40ish kms, house $300 very nice. We live about 40mins peak hour commute, can walk to a good beach and a 4 bed 2 bath 200sqm will cost between $300 and $400. Try realestate.com.au and look at Glenelg, Semaphore, Henley beach, Brighton, Hallett cove, Port Noarunga, Seaford and Aldinga Beach. They span southwards so you'll get a better idea of prices. The train line finishes a Noarlunga, but there is a reasonable bus service, can't comment on it really as i,ve never used it. Good hunting.

Thanks Ann,
Just what I was after, I had no real idea of how far the coast was to the City so I can now have a more educated look at realestate.com.au at some of the burbs you mention.
One last thing which if any of these would be consider surf beaches?
Cheers

Moana Beach is the surfers area. This puts you at about nourlunga, seaford, moana. Seaford is growing and thats where we are. We like it.
