Re: Are all Aussie postmen lazy ?
Just found out why the postmen don't ring your bell to deliver parcels or registered letters etc and always put a pre-written card in your letter box.....wait for it.........they're not allowed to leave their bikes unattended with all the post on it........I asked at the post office this morning as I had to go and collect a letter that needed to be signed for and I hadn't left the house all morning....so there you have it!!! :p

So we put a bucket there, with house number on for a while. |

On the 'face the right way' front, I don't think it is unreasonable for them to expect the bin to be facing the right way - it allows them to do a faster job which would otherwise be lengthier and the automation reduces cost and manpower. Providing you know, a few minutes spent helps everyone. If on average, 50pc of people did the wrong thing then it might take 50pc longer. They might feel justified in passing on the cost to you even if some of it is profit(!) |

Vash will probably know more about this, but I understood that the mail box had to be at the property boundary because otherwise the posty would be tresspassing. I accept that this is a totally different concept to the UK (like me being told off in London by the local council for putting my bins/bin-bags out the front of my house - they had to come onto our property to collect them). |

I would just like to add to this thread.
We arrived in Australia in May and being the country of the licence for everything laws my husband cannot get a job in his chosen line of work till he has the relevant certificates, so while studying and in order for us to pay the bills he is working as a postman. He is up at 4am as they have to start work by 5am, sort out the mail, do redirections, then go out and deliver. The wages are crap, they are so short staffed that he is expected to do overtime nearly everyday, somedays he doen't get in till 5pm. What staff they have they can't keep for long, who wants to work those houses and be paid a crap wage. The motor bikes are very heavy to drive when loaded up, very hard to turn etc. Many of the older houses have stupid letter boxes that won't even fit a postage stamp in, never mind a letter, and thats if you can get letters in when when lots of people don't even bother to remove their junk mail. Some people even "hide" their boxes in some conifers or something to disguise them, all in all its a crap job with crap wages. The other week he had a week off, so some one else has to cover his route, needless to say all the post got messed up that week as the people covering couldn't care less as its not their round. On his return he had 2 people waiting for him, giving him abuse about their mail going to the wrong house, it not even being his fault he had to listen to all this. As for studying to do what he should be rightfully employed as, well thats near on impossible, in at 5pm, dinner, then too bloody tired to study, asleep by 8.30pm to be up again at 4am. Give them a break, postmen work really hard, my husband for one certainly does, and yes he does go up to doors and knock for recorded deliveries, believe me he would rather the person be in as if they are not its another load of hassle having to take that item away and to a post office. Re: Are all Aussie postmen lazy ?
My postie will bring anything bulky down and leave it between the front door and the front screen if I am not in. Should do that with all the post, if it is in the box for more than an hour the snails eat it! Better get that sorted before my Robbie tickets arrive :scared:

Because that rule exists though, a postie cannot really get into deep sheet from his boss for not going to the door.... just has to say I couldn't see my bike. This is why your getting such varied service... It's only going to get worse at the regular postie dies out. |

Or just the new DoDo breed (set hours on contract)
