Don't know about you but we live in scotland and love to shop at Aldi's, i didn't realise there were Aldi's in Oz until we checked the net today...its great news as its something we don't need to miss.
Has anyone been to an Aldi's in Oz?? Do they sell the same products?

I don't know how they compare to Scotland, but they are generally thought to be the cheapest. They don't have them in WA though.

For our family of 4 I'd say we have reduced an average 220/230 Aud shop @ Coles or Safeway down to 150/160 bucks.
Really enjoy their different foreign food specials, that they have every week.

Yeah, i remember checking the au site (sad I know
) and thay had UK food specials, made me chuckle
Bit daft really as they have european specials here and I don't find that funny
Beware of too good to be true specials though a friend recently bought a toilet bowl from them for a bargain price, got it home, plumbed it in then water started leaking everywhere, they phoned the store to be told they'd had lots of complaints as apparently the bowls were porous
Sometimes you get what you pay for

have to admit though I'm impressed by they're groceries they can save you a fortune compared to tescos especially if your not that fussed about brand names

Yes, I was distressed to find no alcohol in Qld. However, there is nearly always a bottle store located next to a supermarket and we found the prices way cheaper than buying from a bottle store in NZ - so supermarket prices anyway.

I would have been distressed if there was no alcohol in Queensland too!!

Dan Murphys do a mean pink bubbles cleanskin and their cleanskin Sav's from SA are wonderful and neither of them much more than $6 a bottle!!
Hic!!
Typical... I can even turn a foodie thread into alcohol related
!! Sorry OP!

I think it's more to do with the checkout people having to be 18 years old to sell liquor. Reason being afaik, no Coles or Safeway that I know of has alcohol in their supermarkets here, they have adjacent bottleshops. Aldi is the only place they have it on their shelves. I Could be wrong on the actual ruling.

There's an Aldi being built on Brisbane Northside (Albany Creek)
I've also heard that Costco are moving into Oz and have earmarked sites in both Melbourne & Brisbane initially.
Competition is good!

Yes, sorry. No alcohol in Qld supermarkets, I meant.
I think that's a state-wide legislation. Not sure why some do and some don't in Melbourne, but I don't think it's age. We have checkout workers here under 18. They're allowed to put wine through but have to ring for a supervisor. Last time it happened to me I thought she wasn't sure if I was over 18.
Alas, she was under 18.

Apparently shoppers would like supermarkets to sell it cos then we could do all the shopping in one hit but the State is paranoid about binge drinking.
Having spent 20 minutes in the fast checkout queue this week (and then had the checkout dragon break one of the jars I was trying to buy as she dropped the carrier bag on the counter too hard!), I can understand their concern......I'd have drunk it all before I'd paid for it

No, its State law here in Qld - no alcohol in supermarkets. Go to the bottleshop next door where they glare at you for going in with your shopping trolley and the guy behind the counter looks young enough to be my grandson (and hasn't heard of Baileys, never a good sign!).

) in a straitjacket. We don't have any issues like that down here
I like not having the alcohol in supermarkets. Having two separate receipts makes my shopping bill look smaller

I like ALDI here, I wouldnt entertain using them when we were back in the Uk though...but I love it now. They sell yorkshire puds and European stuff more like what we were used to and my shopping bill is heaps cheaper too
