Can I take a small air rifle over in my shipping? Will it cause any problems in customs/ Does it have to be registered? can anyone help

I've just emailed customs about that. Will let you know the answer, in the meantime, check out this link

Aus doesn't distinguish between air rifles and rim fires. They all need a license. I had a Thoben Rapid 7 in the UK and looked at bringing it to Aus. Wasn't worth the hassle. Also, silencers are totally illegal here.

You'll find you can't ship it without gaining a licence, something you can't do without joining a club or having sufficient acreage to justify owning a rifle. While it's not impossible it certainly is made very difficult red tape wise. I sold all mine before we left.
Here, as an other poster has said no distinction is made between rim fire or air rifles they all need licencing. Just to keep a licence you have to attend a gun club X amount of times per annum if you fail to attend sufficient practice days your licence is revoked.
