I feel if you have to worry about trace elements it's not worth doing.

You'd never eat anything and be consigned to eating straw and lucerne! Impressive the way people learn what is in their food.

This talk about veggys reminds me of that Kev Wilson (Aussie comedian) sketch - the feminist etc (can't remember exactly what she was, she was more than a veggie) says to the bloke eating a steak
"do you know how that animal died?"
he says
"you starved it to death"

I'm not worried about trace elements, just about eating something that an animal had to die for to produce.

I've managed to eat a perfectly healthy, balanced diet so far. I thought your tenet was that if you can't do something properly, then don't do it.

I have no idea why some veggies eat veggie sausages etc. I never have and don't see the point. I also don't eat quorn etc.

The problem I have is that it is hard to tell here what is suitable. Tonight I've been to Woolworths and tried to buy garlic bread. Some of them said outright that they contained animal fats, but others contained amylase, which is an enzyme found in saliva. But is there a synthetic version or was it taken from an animal? Also cheese is labelled as containing starter cultures(?) and enzymes. Are these of animal origin or not?

We went to a fantastic Indonesian restaurant in Paddington. Where else would you recommend?

Jane
I'm sorry but the argument about veggies eating veggie sausages and veggie burgers etc is a load of codswallop as far as I'm concerned. Does a beefburger look like a cow? Does a pork sausage look like a pig? No, they are merely convenient ways of processing the food for cooking. So it doesn't matter if they were are animal or vegetable - the sausage refers to the shape not the content.

And you can get veggie "meat" in Oz. Could in Sydney anyway - Big Fresh sold it.

A quick question related to this - Red Bull apparently contains alot of Vit B and I am quite addicted to it. So will it work with the mossies and do they sell it in WA ( I ask this because we could not buy it in France as it is apparently banned).

Default Veggie food labeling

Aaargh! I'm not a veggie, but am fearfully allergic to fish (even Worcester Sauce's tiny amount of anchovy essence makes me really sick). At least in the UK, I can buy ready meals marked as 'Suitable for veggies' ie no fish.

How do they cope with Nut allergies in Oz - are products labelled for that, as they are in the EC?

Actually, I guess that poor food labelling's a good thing, on balance - it will mean I trust nothing ready made & have to prepare 'proper' food!

Anya.

we're still living in an empty house because customs haven't cleared our stuff yet. This is very annoying because it means I can't cook anything and its really, really hard to buy any food which can just be shoved in the oven that is vegetarian.

There is no 'suitable for vegetarian' labelling here, so you have to scrutinise everything and even then the 'E' numbers could be of animal origin and you just don't know. Moan over.

The sunset last night was really beautiful, tonight some galahs flew over when I was outside and the kookaburras were laughing their heads off. We have a tame possum living in our garden which takes food out of your hands and lets you stroke her.

Joseph has settled in well at school. He's formed a group of friends with 3 others, Joshua, Jacob and Sky! He starts swimming lessons next week and he'll be in a group of three. In the UK, he was still on a waiting list after 7 months.

Jim gets bitten by mosquitoes as soon as he steps out of the house, which means they ignore me! Good for me, not for him. I've finally been brave enough to drive his 4x4, although I have to climb into the thing, and slide out!

Jane
Hi Jane
so pleased that things are going well for you, can't wait to have wildlife in the garden, our friends live in Albany Creek and say that the kookaburas make a great noise in the morning!!
I'm delighted to hear that Joseph has settled into school and made friends.
How is Jim coping with the mozzies? great that the ignore you eh?!
How's the 4 x 4? what make/model is it? i drive a suzuki vitara here, would love to ship it but hubbys says no way (probably cos its bright pink!!!)
keep in touch mate and good luck with the vegetarian food
hugs

Hi Anya,

The labelling for allergies is good here. They tell you if the food has been processed on the same machinery as nuts and shellfish, so you'll have no problem.

Some times the labelling does go a bit too far !

I bought a packet of Almonds the other week, and the packet label said "Warning: Traces of nut may be found in this product."

As far as mozies are concerned, Vit B didn’t seem to have any affect with me. Found the best combination is:-

1. Head to toe with Bushman 20%+ DEET mozie spray.
2. Multiple mozie coils and citronella candles.
3. Avoid perfumed deodorants.
4. 1% Hydrocortisone cream for the bites.

We had several threads on veggie food a while back (Mrs DUP is a veggie). Avoid MacDonalds chips - they're cooked in lard (shortening)! We bought a deep fat fryer to let us have veggie chips cooked in sunflower oil (had some last night - yummy!) Oh yeah, the frozen chips have rennet on them, too.

Also watch out for some of the supposedly labelled 'vegetarian' products - for some reason they seem to think that oyster sauce is veggie....!

I am a vegetarian and eat vegie burgers, sausages, quorn etc. Why? Cos I like the taste of meat. I just don't agree with a lot of the issues. What is wrong with that?

Fancy your wife being a veggie Mr Downunderpom huh???!!!!

Blame American style litigation. Cover your ass at all times!

Loved the comment by Bix "packed by nuts", very good! Made me laugh.
