To you also :) We're actually flying into Sydney and checking in on our dog to make sure he's all well before travelling to Brisbane. So you'll have a head start - have a safe journey :)

One thing to consider ......... WA has salaries 10-15% below Est coast but house prices approx 40% below East coast - Do the math !!!!!!!

approx $200 per week electric / ins etc
$150-200 per week supermarket
$50-80 per week petrol

wages come out with maybe $750.00 - $480.00 leaves $270.00 ..
how can we buy a house for this .. average house £350000 - $ 450000
had a look at what we can borrow on $1000.00 per week and tops $155.000 .. and thats without any medicals bill or clothes ..
Please can someone help .. I really am having sleepless nights as whether we are doing the right thing or not !!!!!!!
We have a nice house good jobs ( I work 2 days a week in travel) and 1 ski holiday and 1 summer holiday per year ... do we go or stay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To start with why do you want to emigrate? What are your priorities?

To be honest, your house money from the UK would help buy a house. If both of you are working then you could easily buy a house. I work part-time while back at university and my husband fairly much supports us both and we still manage well - in fact far better than in the UK. We eat fresh organic food now - none of the packaged processed crap that the majority of people eat in UK. And don't have to shop in supermarkets!!! We have more expendable income and enjoy a far better standard of living - being able to go out more. Mind you would be a bit hard to go skiing from Perth or Qld!!

Surely you would build insurance into your hourly rate?

Why is it all people want to move to hot arid parts of Aus, that are soulless backwaters? With skin cancer on the increase it makes me laugh that the majority of people to this forum only consider the warmer parts of Australia. We live in Melbourne which has so much to offer - a great uni for me, loads of restaurants and live music venues - the great ocean road, Phillip Island and the Prom, all within a day's drive.

Mind you, if you live in the suburbs (in ant city), they are horrible places! Large sprawling communities that are divided up by 6 lane highways.

If you're so well off why even think about it? I think Australia can survive without your contribution to the cultural mix and diversity. After all, I wonder what contribution a part-time travel agent would make to the community; esp. when you can book it all online.

Re: affording to live !!

I have read this thread with interest as today is one of the days where I am thinking 'oh my god, what are we doing, we must be mad 'etc etc...... and then I think how will I feel in 10 years time if we don't try this (not just for ourselves but also for our children aged 1 and 3). I don't want to think what if, what if and live to regret it. Luckily we will have an smallish amount of money to take with us but earning who knows, I have only a rough idea (we are both nurses) hoping to head for Perth - Bunbury has been mentioned by other half. But the main reason we are going is not financial, its a lifestyle thing and at the end of the day if we hate it I am sure they will never shut the borders!

Well if anyone can give me any info that might help with the above ie what is there in Bunbury to amuse two young children and a mum thats hoping to work part time then it will be greatly appreciated.

Can I just say thanks for the interesting posts and distinct lack of backbiting that has appeared on here lately. Its nice to read helpful, informative posts and not to feel that the criticism will come thick and fast for 'stupid' questions and comments

Thanks again

Lindsey :)

However, I hold tight to the fact that Ozzies manage to live there AND eat, so why can't we ? We don't have any debt but we are unique - all of my friends have debts ranging from £5k to £40k on top of a mortgage ! We have one car and a work van, one holiday a year - would love to camp but you can't plan that in the UK due to weather and, if you did get away the traffic jams mean that it takes two hours to drive 5 miles ! Our mortgage is for £170,000, payment for which equals my salary.

Today we went out for the day to a wildlife place - £20 to get in, our zoo is nearly £40 for a family of 4 plus parking fee and the one free event we had - a hot air balloon festival - the parking was £8 !! I calculated that, in a week off, taking the kids out, it costs me over £100. We don't have parks as such and the beach consists of traffic jams should the sun peek out.

Basically, I guess what I'm saying is that - Oz is definitely NOT the cheap haven it's portrayed on the 'reality' programmes but you must prioritise what's important to you. We have a 4 bed detached house here but I'm quite happy to get a 2 bed on a biggish plot and build on/up if and when poss. As for hols, hubby will be self-employed, so no work no money, so would be very happy with a number of weekend camping trips in different and interesting areas, as opposed to my current one week on a sunlounger by a pool in Greece. My main aim is to give up work and, if so, will be able to grow fruit/veg to cut on costs, maybe work evenings if needed. I just want to be the wife and mum I want to be and can't be in the UK. Until the kids leave home we'll always struggle financially and I'd rather do that in the sun that the grey drizzle here. :)

you will be absolutely fine because you know what you want. we would spend a fortune on a day out in UK but we dont here. i can just imagine you on your farm growing your veg, sitting in the sun, and depending where you are going and how much money you bring you will do it. Densie

Re: affording to live !!

My advice would be – don’t worry.

If you keep comparing then you will have a dreadful time. Somebody said earlier that if Aussies can do it – so can you – but not if you keep comparing life to the UK.

We’ve been here for two months. My salary is $64000 – single income family of four.
We didn’t have much cash in the UK so it’s no big difference. It is unlikely that we will be dual income for a few years as we have a young child and we’ve chosen to have one us stay at home.

Take home – about $920 per week. Nearly half that goes on rent – and we haven’t yet registered for tax credit, rent assistance etc. Do we manage? Yes. Do we have a great time? Yes. Is it a great country? Yes. Was the move a good one? Yes. Any regrets? No. Will we stay forever? Don’t know. Will we return to the UK? No.

Here’s what makes it great for families – the zoo - $100 (45 GBP) for one year’s family membership – unlimited visits! The parks – free. The beaches – free.
The weather – fabulous. Eating out for a family of four cost us $28 the other day – great Japanese food (OK we only have two little kids who don’t eat much but it’s still not bad!). And those people who say that you soon get tired of the beach and the parks – yes probably, but a 4 year old doesn’t!!

I had huge fears about our move – not helped by some people on this forum. It is a great place but please – don’t make comparisons with the UK – most people who are unhappy or who return seem to fall into this trap. Just enjoy what the country has to offer and don't sit at home in the evenings getting your UK and Australia calculators out. If you don’t have lots of cash you won’t die! You’ll just have to eat rice instead of caviar!

I actually really like England - but it just isn't for me and my family. I don't have any time for the "too many asylum seekers/Blair's let the country go the dogs" brigade. My problems with England are basically due to the dreadful climate and the lack of affordable activities for kids to keep them away from the TV. I've noticed a huge difference in my kids since arrival. They rarely ask to put the tv on (because it's so crap!!) and they just seem so much more energised. (And it isn't even summer yet!)

spot on,im so glad you wrote this you have cheered me up.
I was feeling a bit down today because of the threads lately on here being quite depressing. not that i dont understand because i do only too well, and i sympathise with you all . We never get fed up with the well kept parks and beautiful beaches especially because they are free. We spend 3 hrs on a sunday at the leisure centre, for the 3 kids and me and hubby 10 dollars, and tehy have a great time, 6 month family pass for koombana bay to see dolphins, $9,
Kids start surf club end sept, 30 each for the full course sun. morning, sausage sizzle afterwards.
soccer $ 70 for the season. If we go mcds about $40 2 aduts 3 kids.
My kids dont watch as much TV ,we go to bed earlier but get up earlier, you do come here for the lifestyle, we manage fine, much the same as in UK only we could not afford most things in Uk.
day out at Bpool 100 pound easy
camelot 50 pound just to get in
Family ticket into zoo is about 40 pound
kids dont appreciate a day out in the country, we do. they just get bored.
My kids are very rarely bored here.
Andmy hubby is only on 45000 a year at the moment. we do get assistance from centrelink , family allowance.
Some people are never happy whatever they earn you have to live to your means. Denise
