Advice - Where to live in Melbourne?
Hi all,
I had posted this on the Britvic site but no reponses as yet. I thought it might get more exposure here...
We are just starting our 136 visa application and have started looking at suburbs in Melbourne (my wife, 6 year old son and myself). Our priorities are:
1/ First priority is living in a location where we can find a good school for my son. We don't want to have to move him a year after we arrive. Maybe this is totally unrealistic.
2/ Commuting to work. No idea where this will be. Maybe it'll be in the CBD, I've no idea (my wife is a software developer and I work in Training). Ideally like to live in a location where we have good public transport/or where driving to work is not impossible.
3/ Near to a beach. After all this is one of the main reasons we are looking to emigrate!!!
4/ Low level of crime (obviously).
5/ Rental/buying cost. Probably looking to rent year 1. If things work out then we would hope to buy.
So far we have been looking at Fitzroy, Williamstown, Essendon, Strathmore, and our favourite so far - Port Melbourne. This has been purely on researching the internet.
Can anyone offer advice on the above locations or any other suggestions?

Eeeeek, watch the water in the bay, it isn't the sharks you have to be wary of

There is a sewerage outlet off the beach there and it gets very skanky particularly after heavy rain.
For nice beaches I would head out to Mornington but the water on the beaches facing the ocean is obviously not as calm as the water within the bay.

It sounds as if you want a Bayside suburb- Sandringham, Hampton, Brighton, lovely, but expensive compared to the other burbs. Go inland by one or two burbs and its a better price. Williamstown, Sanctuary lakes, and out further west is cheaper.
Also look at the burbs on the south eastern side- but would take a bit longer to reach beach.
There are quite a few expats with young children in Melb who can give you school info. be patient and I'm sure the Britvics will reply

No idea on the state of beaches in Port Melb. It is more of an industrial area although I have noticed more houses being built down there perhaps because of its proximity to St. Kilda? There are alot of trucks on the roads down there. I can vouch for this as I am volunteering at the Games at a venue in Port Melbourne and on Monday morning before the gates were open a bunch of us were out the front counting the number of waves or honks we could get from trucks and we got alot
hopefully there is someone who lives down that way who can give you some more info.

I've posted plenty of W'town photos in this thread:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...9&page=3&pp=15
There are masses of photos of Williamstown, Melbourne (and rest of Victoria) - nearly 150 locations:
http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/williamstown/photos/
You'll get property information on 427 suburbs at:
http://www.domain.com.au/content/imp...005_Spring.pdf
If considering Port Melbourne, widen the net to include the surrounding suburbs of South Melbourne, Albert Park, Beacon Cove.
I'll put the thinking cap on and come back later with other suburbs which might tick most/all the boxes.

Essendon is good if you are into large jet aircraft.
SE Suburbs are the best places to live IMO.
State or private school you after? Get a copy of the Good School Guide. I used this when we first arrived to shortlist schools then made a shortlist of suburbs based on that.

Hi,
We live in Beaumaris, Bayside. It's a beautiful suburb, by the beach, a very easy 30 minute drive along the beach to the CBD, great community, cracking shops, restaurants and cafes and some excellent schools and kinders - we have a 3 year old at kinder and our 5 year old is at Primary School. We've been here for 7 months and love the area.
The only downside is that it can be pricey, though rental prices have dropped considerably in recent months.
Drop me a PM if you need any more info.
Good luck.
