My hubby work has dropped to 4 day week here in uk and looks set to drop again. As we have spent a fortune on getting visa, we have decided to just go for it. Will have a few funds from sale of house, so if need be will have to use them. Just wanted to know which areas are worst effected!

Best of luck, please have a plan B

We are getting phone calls from aussie tradies who worked for us up to 6 years ago!!! Many now cant find work. Thats aussie blokes with up to 30 years experience.

Nobody is making up construction work has slowed here, even the Master Builders reckon up to 80% of jobs will go.

Not sure going to adelaide instead of qld is a great move, the volume of construction work in Adelaide is a drop in the ocean compared to Qld at the best of times.

Best place for work will be to track any big cyclones, (I am being serious) always creates a glut of work. Or the nasty outback places nobody wants to go to, altough we have had phone calls from far North qld/mining towns so even that looks quiet.

4 days is better than nothing. We have had next to nothing the whiole time that we have been here. We are spending our house fund and i think we will be returning in March as we don't want to spend any more of it.
I realise you have spent alot on your visa, but don't you have 12months to validate? What is the rush....seriously, iif you want to give yourself the best chance of making it out here wait a while, it really is no fun chasing work and getting nowhere:frown: We have literally applied for over a hundred jobs, we have also tried getting other work - courier, cleaning etc.... not interested. well, why would they be when the only experience you have is in plumbing?
I don't want to worry you but would hate to think that your experience would be cut short as ours has been:unsure:

If you have decided to give it a go then I genuinely wish you all the best; you have to follow your instincts in major decisions, right or wrong. The point I was trying to get across to you is that even Aussies with bags of experience are struggling to find work and like it or not your hubbie will be at the bottom of the ladder; unless he has contacts here willing to offer him a job. Seeing as you seem to have made your mind up I would seriously suggest your hubby make the trip on his own initially to see if things are as bad as we are saying; this will cut your costs down considerably and if your hubby struggles to find work then its not a great loss and you will be able to wait until things pick up again. Of course when he gets back to UK things may be just as bad there. All the best Chris.

sutty77, if you think the visa has cost a fortune, then consider the costs of flying over, relocating all your stuff/buying new stuff, renting/ purchasing a house, then having no income for e.g. 3months or 6months, then returning to the UK... The visa cost is not a fortune in comparison.

easty1976 has come up with a great suggestion, I reckon its a really good compromise given current climate.

good luck!

My husband (electronics engineer with 20 years experience, on MODL) could not find work for 9 months. He eventually moved interstate at a cost of another nearly $7k for shipping, etc. Like you, he should have walked off the plane into a job, but it's not always that easy, is it?
