Default Advice on cars

We are just about to buy a car and have no idea what to buy. Wondered if anyone could offer some advice. Our needs are:
Reasonable priced and easily available spare parts.
Station wagon.
Possibly 4WD or powerful enough to tow a horse trailer

We have a budget of $20k. Don't want to get a 'truck' as we live in Paddington in Sydney and the large 4WD vehicles are way too big for the streets around our house. I was thinking maybe a Volvo but have no idea if European car parts and servicing are far more expensive than Jap cars.

Any comments / advice on potential models of car would be great. Also does anyone know of a car auction place in Sydney???

Hmmm, twas a Subaru Forester until that last line. Holden do a funky 4wd SW (Adventure?), but again budget.
Volvo parts are expensive here in the UK!!, I think you can guarantee that is greater in OZ!
Note lower depreciation in OZ, and acceptance of 2nd-hand as 'long-legged' your budget and requirements IMO will prob say to me a well-haggled 3/5yo compact 4wd (due to no.s on market)(most are shorter than a Volvo SW) and there is a wide selection there, tho think X-trail for towing/off-road won a recent thread.
