Please can someone/anyone let me know how cold it really gets in Adelaide and as the houses don't have heating is it required or can you manage without.
I know this is a stupid thread but it really would help me in a big decision I need to make.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, we spent a year in Adelaide, and yes the winter is quite cold, I was very surprised how cold, the houses havent got double glazed windows, GSH etc so it does make the winter nights seem even colder, lucky they done have a long winter eh? I would deffo go 4 a house with a good heating system if I were you tho!

Hi - I lived in Adelaide for a year too (going back permanently in a few months). Winters aren't cold in the UK sense of cold, but without central heating you will definitely notice the chill in the house in the mornings and evenings. Many houses are now getting reversal cycle air con where you can get cold or hot air depending on the season.
My sister in Sydney also notices the cold in winter there because theres no central heating - so its not just Adelaide.
I wouldn't rule out Adelaide just because it gets more of a wiinter than other states - coming from the Uk its actually nice that they have more defined seasons in Adelaide than in some other states. (even sun and 40dgerees can get boring sometimes!!) It did make me laugh when I saw people wearing hats, gloves and scarves the first time in Adelaide - when to me it was a nicee enough day at over 10degrees - but to them felt cold!!!
strangely enough my aussie OH notices the heat in the UK more than he does in Oz, cos we don't have aircon here - even tho its cooler than he is used to back home. I guess its what you are used to.

If we had been there another winter we would have had heating put in and then had no complaints about winter.I wouldn't let the thought of a cold winter put you off going to Adelaide as it was still beautiful( more in a different way) and the day time was certainly nothing like winter in UK( I'm from Cumbria if that helps?)just cold at night but a house with heating- then no problem!!!

I have spent a winter in Adeaide and the cold in the house was like growing up in 70's Britain, ie a gas fire in the living room. It's fine once you're up in the morning but some days the thought of jumping out of bed was horrible, especially before 8.30. Also I could see my breath in the shower. It's only for 3 months though.

Thanks to all that replied.
I think it is something that I may have to get used to then. I suppose that at the end of the day it is for only 3 months of the year rather than the 6 plus we have in the UK.
Thanks again.

If being warm is important to you then go up to quuensland.
I am in adelaide and believe me it is freezing in the winter and even at times in autumn and spring. You will need coats/electric blankets etc
As for it being 3 months forget that!!
more like 6 to 8 months
its just start of autumn at the moment and I am in a jumper and have had the electric blanket on for last couple of weeks
I probably feel the cold more than most(circulatory problems) so altho the temps in adelaide looked ok to me before I got here I must admit I was shocked at how cold it is at times. So wish I had gone up to queensland instead

Absolutely!! three months? which three? it can be March to October..... I know Im a soft southerner but I too was taken back to my 1970's childhood and not wanting to leave the living room!
Many people sit in the evening very wrapped up with blankets on believe me I had no idea it would be this cold....this is my third winter coming up so Im a bit more prepared, you need propewr winter clothes, I have my electric blanket etc etc...you adapt a bit! but yes heating is good! esp reverse cycle in the bedroom you can put on for a few minutes in the morning to get dressed!

You all need a good old woodburner - my house is lovely and warm
(mind you, the double brick probably makes a difference too

Average low/high in Adelaide in the coldest month (July) is 7/15 celsius which is about the same as Naples or Valencia. Manchester is 1/6, Canberra is 0/11 and Brisbane is 10/21. Try Ottawa at -16/-6, Beijing -9/2 or Ulan Bator -27/-16 (world's coldest capital)
