Default adelaide

hi all, for the last six months we have been looking at perth, bunbury areas. but the more we look at house prices our heads have been turned towards adelaide. it seems you can get quite a bit more for your money there. does anyone no whats its like for work. im a machine operator my oh is a hairdresser and is over half way thru an open uni course in working with young people [e118]. also which suburbs are the most popular, we would not want to spend more than $350 and not right in the middle of town, outskirts would be good. we have 2 kids 12, and 9.
many thanks

Hi Tony/Paula

I am new to this This is my second posting! i had the pleasure of being in adelaide in summer 2004 as my husband worked there for 8 months!I only spent a mere 3 weeks there but adelaide is a fantastic place with plenty of open spaces, parks, culture, shops, beaches etc. We are now considering a move ourselves. I have a 7 year old girl and a 20 week old girl and we feel the life changes will benefit us all as a family. After watching wanted down under all week well....it has tempted us even more. The only downfall is leaving family behind and I blart now at the tv when the family watch clips of their family giving them goodbye meassges what would i be like if it were for real. The houses were stunning and we would probaby be not able to spend more than yourselves. I think like the tv you need to decide first if it's city, country or beach life you want and go from there...I hope we can be penpals!! and help each other on the long and winding road that may be ahead but it helps so much to talk with those that are having the same emotions rather than people saying theres not much here good for you !!!!

I

Hi,

Adelaide is lovely IMO and yes you can get loads for your money here. Of course some parts are a bit dearer than others, but you should be able to get a nice house for what you have to spend. Stay away from Elizabeth and Smithfield though, they are the trouble spots here. (Not all the area is bad but some parts are)

There are some nice developments going up at the minute at Salisbury, Andrews Farm, Angle Vale, Munno Para to name a few up here in the North of Adelaide.

Jobs I can't really help with because I've not been looking for them particular ones. I do know a hairdresser, she is working flat out most of the time. There are more factory based jobs here in the North. There are a few campuses around for uni, all specialising in different things.

Hey Guys,

don't be confused, Adelaide is a fantastic place. i have lived here for nearly 2 years now. i live in Henley Beach which is a seaside suburb that is still really reasonable. i have read some of the other replies and personally i wouldn't go as far as Gawler, Salisbury, etc - they are pretty far out in the scheme of things and i guess i dodn't move to Oz to travel 45 mins to get to work. Have a look at areas that are still classified as the 'metropolitan area' - within 30 mins of the city. you can get a lot for your money but still have all of the amenities and convenience.

i work in finance as a lending manager - mainly mortgages, and i can tell you that if you are looking to rent there is not alot out there at the moment. i run a re-settlement service for ex-poms and i have lots of clients looking for rentals, it really is difficult ATM.

rest assured, Adelaide is one of Oz's best kept secrets and you will love it, it is such an easy place to live and work - i know several hairdressers who are looking for stylists as my sister is a hairdresser and she is looking to move out here so i have been loooking at her job prospects.

if i can help any further please pm me and i'll answer any questions i can

Unhappy Re: adelaide and which visa??

Hi - first posting for me! Noticed the chat about adelaide so thought i`d take advantage. Still at the "making the step" stage. My dilemma is that i`m not sure which visa to go for. I`m a 42 yr old itu nurse with a husband and 7 yr old daughter. I have family in adelaide who are more than willing to be our sponsors and i have no hesitation whatsoever about the move, just want to do it right!!! Confused about the options and don`t want to compromise my chances being so near to the 45yr age limit!!! Any advice??
PLEEEEZ!!!

Hi Callie,

I love Henley Beach, you lucky person living down there. For us work is up near Gawler so we would have to travel for nearly a hour to get to work if we move that far down. So really it depends what you do for a living and where the work is. Hubby couldn't find any factory work down there (he's a maintenance electrician) so we have to stay up here for now anyway.

I agree about renting, there is a waiting list here in Mawson Lakes at the minute. Guess that will make it easy for me if we want to get out of the rental early though

Hi, as a nurse you will have no trouble getting a visa. I would suggest you either fill out an online assessment to see how many points you get or speak to an agent about your options.

Don't be hasty to take any visa, as a nurse you will be able to get a permanent one from the start. All you need to do is figure out which one is best for you.

There is also a nurses forum on here, so pop in there and you'll find all sorts of information about what you need to do.

Hi Clifty I'm still at the same stage making the step!! so basically at the start point! I also have a seven year old girl and we are thinking of adelaide.! (I also have a 20 week old!)I am 35 but dont have a skilled trade like most people I have worked in a hotel all my life in Front office and Reservations. I have held numerous Management roles but it's not classed as a skill. My husband is the one with the qualifications.! As it takes so long I was thinking of doing a hairdressing course! Are you literall at stage 1?

Only been here 6 months. But after 2 weeks we knew it was right for us. Both kids are happy and settled, we love it. Huby is working, life is back to normal (plus some)

No regrets here

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Feel a bit on me lonesome sorting it out. Friend just emigrated to Brisbane for good and recommended this site - she got all of her advice from here, and they did not go through an agent. Do you recommend that? So excited - tummy turns over everytime i think about doing something !!!!!!!!!! How sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still - sure it`ll be sorth it Xxxxxx
