Converted? In what way? You mean assess his or hers skills for migration?

I had my skills assessed by athe ACS, if you are sucessful then they send you an application form. It seems that if you are accepted by the ACS for migration purposes then membership is very stright forward. It only took 10 days and a few dollars. I think it helped that I had BCS membership as thet BCA & ACS have an agreement.

They don't seem to be taken very seriously, except by themselves. In my more than 20 years in the IT industry around Australia I neither seen them nor heard of them in the workplace. Admittedly all my time has been spent in the small scale world, PCs LANs WANs etc. And for all the 80s and most of the 90s, the PC world was a bit "well, you know..." looking down one's nose.

There is a push for some sort of National IT Certification. The ACS put in for it and weren't exactly knocked back by the Federal Govt, not were they encouraged. And funny as it seems the national Engineering body also put in a claim to provide certification standards and their application seemed to be viewed more favourably.

I have worked and advised all over Australia, mainly in Federal Government and no-one even mentions the ACS. It isn't built into contracts as being mandatory. Commonwealth Contracts mention skills, qualifications and experience in their Contracts but nary a whiff of the ACS.

I suspect that they have "pissed on their own campfire" (as my newly made up saying goes) when amongst other things back in the late 80s the President of IBM Australia applied for membership of the ACS and they knocked him back! His primary degree was in Chemistry. Apparently he had no degrees in any IT fields.

Another example was a fellow we employed who was somewhat brilliant but never got past first year Uni. We sent him over to the US several times for IT related stuff. ACS knocked him back too as he didn't have a degree in IT. The last I heard of him was that he was Cisco's top gun in Canberra sorting out all their problems.

We basically wrote them off as irrevelant.

The mainframe world may be different, I dunno.

I don't really know as I have been here for 3 months. I was headhunted from Perth (Aust) but our product is for defined vertical markets. Have a look @ www.ocean.com.au Although coding is fairly generic

From what I gather it is fairly robust. Our mob are on the lookout for coders etc as we are growing. Although the number of ads in Tuesday's Australian (the IT day) is way down on what it used to be. I suppose its the usual conflict of signals and who you know.

I know that's not much use. I will ask @ work today to see what we want and let you know, that may give you an indication.
