Talking About to become Australian citizens !

Approved for our citizenship applications this week and will be getting 'sworn in' as fully fledged Ozzie citizens on Australia day - Jan 26th 2005.

We are really looking forward to singing the Ozzie national anthem with pride as citizens on Australia Day !

Arrived in Melbourne with our permanent resident visas on Sept 15th 2002.

We feel like we have really settled in here now although it was a major move at the time having not been here before and having no friends or relatives here to support us at the start.

2 years + later - a very different story. Both very happy in our jobs, a good circle of close friends, about to buy a house in the next year. Ireland is a long way away from family, but we are really enjoying our life here now and believe the gamble was well worth it.

Good on you both. Why not come along to the Melbourne meet next weekend at Cardinia Dam.

That is great news. Sounds like you definitely made the right decision.

I hope that we get the opportunity to do the same.

Well done one and all! You can finally call yourselves true blue Aussies!

Hope you've learnt the words of the National Anthem!

Congratulations to you. As for the anthem, best only learn the first verse, here is verse 2:

When gallant Cook from Albion sail’d,
To trace wide oceans o’er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England’s flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
Brittannia rules the wave!
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair!

Eeeeewwwwww!

Am not sure 'Britannia' rules anything at the moment, apart from on the Rubgy pitch...

Anya.

Cook sailed under a *British* flag, not an English one. However in 1770 the Union Flag had no red diagonal stripes as these were only added in 1801 when Ireland became part of the United Kingdom.

The second verse that's usually sung (the third verse of the original) goes as follows:

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Bloody Hell ! That's an eye opener. I knew the lyrics right enough to what I thought was this second verse, but had not realised that it was actually the third and that the 'real' second one had been dropped when it was usually sung.
Looking at all the references to 'Albion', 'Britannia', 'Old England', 'British courage' etc though , I sure can understand why :scared:

p.s. Just came across this info at http://www.australienbilder.de/e-hymne.htm.....Seems like that second verse is a common complaint

"The words were written in 1884 and its content has been disputed due to the fact that on the one hand the aborigines are not respected and on the other hand the British orientation of the second verse is too much for many people. Therefor the second verse is normally not sung...."
