Ahhh, the standard question - as if it somehow excuses the situation. Nobody has said that the aboriginal 'problem' is easy to resolve - but, why is life for indigenous folk so much worse in Oz than in NZ or USA?

Serious answer: the indigenes of both NZ and the US were socially more advanced than their Aboriginal counterparts. There's bound to be more to it than that.

Here's an interesting article on Aboriginal Australia. Warning: it's on Geocities, so you IE users may get popups, etc.

The lesser evil
Having lived in the USA and in Australia, I feel that racism in Australia is worse than in the USA; I've lived in the south of USA, considered the most racist place in USA. However, that's a whole different story

I don't know the cause of the Cabramatta drug issue, but - and I'll go out on a limb here- the aboriginal issue has its roots in their 200+ years of dispossession. After all, they've only been regarded as citizens of their own country during the last 37 years.
The suggestion from last week's BBC programme is that the aboriginal situation isn't going to improve anytime soon.
Let's just hope that a charismatic aboriginal leader doesn't successfully push home the idea that violence is the answer - or Oz could have a mini Zimbabwe on its hands.

In Australia 1% of the population is Aboriginal, another 1% are
whites and people from various ethnic groups that pretend to be aboriginal to get big fat government handouts, so lets say the
aboriginal population is 2% and non-aboriginal population 98%.
It would be pity difficult for some Aboriginal leader to create
a Zimbabwe situation with only 2% of the population on his side against 98% of the population.

my point is still the same.
lots of PC people don't want to confront the fact that there is a minority in that particular area who are making money on the backs of these people by turning them into junkies. These people sparked the riots and will do anything in their power to limit the police powers in that area so they can propogate misery even further.
