Default 457 contracting

Hello fellow expats,
I'm currently on 457 visa. I am aware of the condition 8107 that says that I cannot be self-employed, but wanted to ask if anyone knows a way to get around it. I am working full-time but have some freelance opportunities on the weekends and would like to use them.

Best
Mike

No of course you cannot get around the conditions of your visa. It is a condition and you may only work for your sponsor.

Yes, you can get around it. You apply for (and obtain) a permanent visa then you can work for who you want...

Get your current boss to subcontract you out at weekends, offer them a small cut - 10% or something?

Thanks MarkMC. What if I have a chance to freelance for someone else? Do you think that using my UK account and paying tax in UK is a viable option?

Definitely not. It would a breach of your visa conditions and also you cannot pick and choose where you pay tax, if you perform work in Australia then the income you derive as a result of that work must be paid in Australia.

If you want to do whatever you want, then Dreamy was correct earlier, you need to secure a visa that permits it.

The agency that I contract through used to be able to get contractors on 457. I was talking to my agent recently and he said that the immi dept had put a stop to it.

You are asking people how you can break the law. BE doesn't and won't condone this. Get a Permanent Visa. Thread closed.
