42" LCD TV
 

We need to get a new 42 TV, but wasn't sure if its worth getting one in the UK or getting one when we arrive in Perth in Feb?

Are electrical goods cheaper in Perth? From looking at Richarsounds in the UK they seem alot cheaper.

Any advise would be great.

are priced a few $100 lower. Their ex-demos are especially cheap.

By the time you get to use the TV it may be a similar price in Australia or not much different. On the other hand when you arrive in Australia you may have enough to do with out shopping for TVs with more limited knowledge of the shopping possibilities relative to where you are now.

Others might help you as to whether it is a good idea from a warrantee / service / technical compatibility point of view.

If the unit allows you to specify the country as Australia as part of the setup then I would be less concerned about the technical compatibility.

Personally, I would buy it here as I would be worried about damaging it when shipping.

Given the strength of the Aus $ and forecast interest rate rises prices will get better. Samsung is offering a smaller tv if you buy the bigger one http://www.webprice.com.au/page/shop..._40inch-42inch

Consider the warranty aspect...

My 42" 106cm Full HD LCD 1920 x 1080p 100hz has a 2 year in home warranty, and cost $999 last May.

My 46" 116cm Full HD LCD 1920 x 1080p 100hz has a 3 year in home warranty, and cost $1,299 last week.

A UK warranty 'may' have some difficulties....

My friend got 42 inches from her boyfriend this weekend.. :lol: I will ask her what model and if she liked it! :lol:

Thanks for the replies, I agree that the warranty is a big factor.

Here are two cost examples using the Samsung LA46B550. I belive the UK equivalent is the LE46B550

The LA40B550 is around $1475
The LE40B550 cheapest is £499 (http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/pl/2-12...ng-LE-40B550A5)

With the exchange rate at 1.80 that would put the UK version at $898, so about $577 cheaper which seems like way to much if they are the same versions.

I am not 100% these are the same versions but I bbeliveso as the versions match on both sides with the exception of the LA/LE prefix i.e. series 5, 6 , 7,8 and the various screen sizes 40,46,52,55

Pricing by region:
UK: £UK.
USA: $USA.
Aus: $Aus.

The $USA is down 30% against the $Aus since 2009 March. Larger volumes to the USA also have an effect on price as does depreciation from the date of release which may not be the same for all regions.

I suggest you go to a shop and eye-ball that the particular model you want to buy actually has a country setting of "Australia" as an indication that the model will function fully in Australia.

I agree with Willblack on this one.

Yes, TV's are dearer here, but if you buy a new one in the UK, then pack it and ship it, by the time it arrives, and you are ready to sit down and watch it in your new rental/house, it will probably cost the same or cheaper in Oz, but you wont have had the hassle of packing & shipping, and hope that the warranty is transferrable to Australia.

Wow, difference of approx 550AUD seems to be the norm.

If you get a Samsung with a free 22" that negates the difference but it could just be a Xmas promotion.

Sony has a free PS3.

BTW, wrt webprice my norton is flashing up a rootkit attack from aiongames.com.

Thanks, I agree with all the points.

Not fun purchasing a new toy and not being able to use it for X months...

Can any of you recommend any good AV suppliers in the Perth area? I will be moving to the Woodvale area at the end of Feb 2010.

Not sure what you mean by AV but there are loads of places to buy TV and equipment about 15 minutes away in Joondalup. Both the big chains and the specialist shops are there.
