We're all trying to get Australian citizenship. |

we are all waiting and wondering the same thing. Maybe they'll make it 3, maybe they'll make it 4, who knows? Personally not bothered as I already have it. |
Re: 4 Years for Citizenship
Nine msn has its daily poll on the subject 15,000 voters say yes make them wait the 4 years, only 3,000 say no. Predictable, say what the public wants to hear, whens the election ;)

Re: 4 Years for Citizenship
After checking the citizenship website it looks like it will be retrospective so we will have to wait at least 3 years for citizenship. The reasoning is typically poor though
The requirement was last year raised from two to three years in an attempt to contain the home-grown terror threat. At that time, then citizenship minister John Cobb said the longer migrants spent in Australian society before gaining citizenship, the less vulnerable they were to "falling in with extreme groups". He said the extra time would allow migrants to "get a job, make mates and go to the pub". Maybe we can apply for a waiver as we have arrived here with a job, have made some mates and have been to the pub several times so we have met the required goals of becomming a citizen  Nicky |
Re: 4 Years for Citizenship
Trying to clear up the misunderdstanding - John Howard proposed raising the time to 4 years, he never said what it was at the moment. Some of the press have presumably remembered they were talking about making it 3 and put 2 and 2 together (or should that be 3 and 1 together) and come up with the wrong answer.
I suspect that for frequent travellers etc there may be a work around to get citizenship sooner (prove you have white skin perhaps?) |

Re: 4 Years for Citizenship
Quote from John Howard
""Certainly we are going to lift the waiting period to four years, there will be a fairly firm English language requirement and the paper itself ... will contain quite a number of issues," http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...2-1702,00.html Citizenship act amendments due to go to parliament Jan 2007. So maybe that's when it will become 4 years instead of 2 (as it is now) and instead also of 3 (original proposed change). |
