Default 4 months in Melbourne

Hi people, finally got online and decided to inform you of our thoughts on our migration from Middlesbrough in the UK to Beaconsfield in the SE suburbs of Melbourne. Here goes:
Very sad farewell as we left Boro (wife, stepdaughter and me) my dad was broken hearted, which was an awful sight to see. Cried all the way to Manchester airport and vowed to give it a month and if things didn't work out, then back to Boro for the clan. I was the lucky one, as i managed to secure a job before i landed here, the wife on the other hand wasn't so luck initially. She was offered a few jobs in shops etc, but they wanted her to work for a week or so for free (trial period they called it) she was initially going to do it but thankfully had second thoughts. I bought the cars and she sorted renting a property. I wasn't aware that you have to pay a duty to the government on the purchase price of a car (garage or private sale).
Renting a brand new house in the Berwick Views estate in Beaconsfield, massive 3 bedrooms, 3 living areas, open plan kitchen, double garage with remote doors and nice gardens. You dont pay any council tax here if you rent and there's no TV licence to pay.
I am working as a secondary school teacher and have been messed about with my salary since day 1, i think it's finally sorted now though. Wife is working locally 4 days a week and has every weekend off. Stepdaughter broke her collarbone on her second day at school, this really unsettled her and us of course.
4 months in and we're still here, although i have good and bad days. Wife and stepdaughter love the place. Stepdaughter actually loves going to school, she hated it in the UK, she's made lots of friends and her confidence has gone through the roof (very very shy in the UK). We do loads of things as a family now (we worked to many hours in the UK to do such things) and spend quality time with each other. Oz is a fantastic place and the people are so friendly and genuine. Not sure if we'll stay here (mainly down to me being unsettled) but going to make the most of everyday. Miss my family and friends, but going back to Boro in March next year and hopefully some of my family will visit next year. Ideally. i'd like to do the 2 years here and get the oz passport, then make a decision. Sorry if this thread has gone on a bit.
Best of luck to anyone trying to get out to oz, keep plugging away and good things come to those who wait

Can relate to this, we haven't got there as yet but leaving will be very hard, my Dad and I are very close and it will be very hard saying goodbye. I've decided to do the maths though and it turns out that if they come over for a 2-3 week holiday they would actually spend more time with us than they do now!

They usually see us and the kids about once a week for about 2 hrs. That's 104 hrs a year. If they came to Oz for a 2 week holiday that's 336 hrs. Take out say 10 hrs a night for sleeping that still leaves 196 hrs of quality time together!

I'm gonna use this formula to help win em over!

Phil

Know exactly what you mean, mate. We've been in Melbourne three months, today, and I can relate to what you say about good and bad days. Wife and little one seem to be settling ok, though. Hoping to stay for the forseeable future. Will have to - we've had an offer accepted on a house! Good luck.

Good to read your 'story' and we can all relate to your journey to the airport experience and missing friends and family. Stick in and you'll have more good days and fewer bad days.

What are you teaching? I'm a Business Studies secondary teacher - I.T., Accounting, Business Management etc.

It seems that many are leaving Boro for Melbourne - Mark Viduka said over the weekend that he wants to finish his career with Melbourne Victory!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but, following the new legislation that's coming in, it will actually be 3 years for you to get citizenship....

I've been here 2 years and the first one was the hardest. I do miss family and friends but I now call Melbourne home. I won't say that you'll come to terms with missing family and friends because I don't know you. What I will say is that my findings are that I speak to my parents now more than I did in the UK and that it has become easier. You come to adapt and accept the new relationships with your family in the UK. Its if you don't do this you will remain unsettled.

We live outside of Berwick and it is a beautiful area. I could not afford to live in the same sort of area in the UK.

I still have down days but then I had down days in the UK (Dosn't everyone).
