32 LCD TV - here or there

Hi all

quick question, if I could by a new panasonic 32 LCD TV in the UK for £400, would it be worth me buying it here and taking it rather than buying it there as there are scary prices on certain items?

PS I will already be taking a 20FT container.

Thanks

Sean

Don't bother buying it. You can get decent 42" for £50-100 more over here. Will have correct connections and guaranteed to be compatible also.

Somewhere to get price comparisons: http://www.myshopping.com.au/

You will probably get a better price than that in store though as you can haggle a little. Also if you have other electrical goods to get, you can get a discount for buying them all together (you have to ask for their best price though :D)

Don't forget that any new items brought into the country may also be subject to GST (10%) - well that's assuming they know it's new ;)

Thanks both, still not much in it I suppose although with the exchange rate downturning it may be best buying over there.

If I dont take the GST into consideration there would be about $150 dollar difference (without any discount).

Didnt know about the GST though so thanks for letting me know, suppose I would have to rough the box up a bit.

I declared new stuff as well and not charged gst.

One point to mention, you can get cheap lcd t.v's here to, we just purchased a LG 32 Inch for $780 from a LG outlet. However, the op might find once he moves here with the larger family rooms he wants a bigger tv .
32 inch might not be big enough

Weve just started buying the odd items over here new (toaster kettle), Looking at afew items amonth till we move over. Just items like New knife set, cutlery, pots pans, some bed covers, amongest other stuff. is it advised not to bother then? or just unpack & repack before sending. dont fancy spending anymore on the items.

Just thought it would bee nice when our stuff arrived it would be nice and new. Like xmas all over again

Only thing with buying there and then shipping over is that you have to wait for things to get here, so you'll end up going out and buying kettle, toaster, basic cutlery set etc anyway. So for me I can't see the point unless you intend to ship things out a few months before you set off so that it's here when you get here.

Most things can be picked up on the cheap in KMart, Target, Big W and places like that. Or you can go to a specialist shop if you want better quality stuff.

Don't even consider buying it in the UK.

The digital frequencies are different between Oz and the UK so you'll lose out on the built in digital tuner.

Re: 32 LCD TV - here or there

we had just bought a 40 inch LCD in the UK when our visa was granted, but it was worth our while selling it, even though we lost a couple of 100 pound, as the insurance was over 100 pounds on the tv and because we were sharing container space the tv in the box was another 120 pounds to ship.
Then the wait on the other side, and guarantees fall away, so it was worth it to cut our losses on that side and buy new here.
Agree with what another poster said, you may find 32 inch LCD will look lost in some of the larger rooms over here.

Re: 32 LCD TV - here or there

I will already be taking a 50, 3 x 32s (one used as a pc monitor) and a 23 DVD but hopes were dashed when looking at a TV/Movie room at the prices Oz charged for seemingly cheap TVs (in the UK). (I have had the 4 Tvs for ages)

None are new, just part of what we are taking although bigger may be better, although not all women say so (my missus is a liar lol)

Thanks for the replies guys

Sean
