Thought the Australian news ran a story over a week ago saying that the gov't had changed their mind and would let her stay, but then again, who can trust what a politician says, unless it benefits themselves.

The australian papers were carrying the story today (but you have to subscribe to them so posted the BBC link)
Seems really strange thing to do in someways especially after (I know a totally different case) last weeks Asylum story.

There's no way the government is going to kick her out.. BUT.. if she had done things the right way from the start she would not be an illegal immigrant and would not be having this problem!

well i have just read the story and if she was in UK thay would prob let her stay as where i live is full of asilum seekers and to what we have found out here most are eligal and the gov goin to let them stay so yer think she would have been ok over here

Well, I don't know, where do you draw the line? Her family happily let her stay in the country illegally for five years and now that she's getting old and expensive they want the tax payers to pay for her medical bills? I don't think so!

Basically what this will say if they allow it, is that I can sneak my mum into the country, hide her until she's old and pathetic and then demand citizenship and medicare for her? Think of the president that will set!

On the other hand they can tell the old lady to go home, but which airline will take the risk of flying her back at her age? I think they're pretty much stuck with her, but think it stinks big time for her family to try and force the issue after breaking the law for so many years. I think if she stays then she should be entitled to neither medicare nor a pension, let her family pay for hiding an illegal alien - you shouldn't get rewarded for breaking the law.
