£ Could Collapse in Weeks!!

Jim Rogers, billionaire investor, is saying the GBP £ could collapse within weeks.

Perhaps is already short GBP and wants to see it lower? Who knows but in a few weeks or so we'll finally see.

Pound Could Collapse Within Weeks, Predicts Billionaire Financier Jim Rogers

Jim Rogers February 25, 2010 - Press Dispensary - The UK Pound is on the brink of a collapse which will herald a downturn worse than 2008/9, it could well happen within weeks and the British government is powerless to prevent it. And this in turn will foreshadow a global economic winter that could come before the end of 2010 and make the last two years seem like a mild spring day.

This is the dire prediction of the legendary George Soros’ former business partner, respected billionaire financier Jim Rogers, together with millionaire investment adviser and best-selling author Dr Marc Faber and the controversial millionaire trader and coach Vince Stanzione, ahead of their keynote appearances at next month’s Global Trading Day seminar in Westminster.

As the UK economy stands on the brink of its much heralded double dip after a dismal January and rumblings about its credit rating, as Swiss Bank UBS speculates the risk of a run on the pound*, and as sterling hit a nine month low against the dollar on Friday, the three experts – who all have reputations for making much of their fortunes from predicting and riding economic downturns – are forecasting that a currency crash and then a full scale global “shakedown” are almost inevitable.

“The last few months have seen a ‘false bounce’, shorn up by massive short-term injections of government underwriting,” says Rogers, “but it can’t last. We’ve been applying temporary sticking plasters, not long-term cures. Later this year we’ll see the start of the real recession, with more Lehman-scale disasters and a fallout which won’t stop until the underlying malaise is genuinely cured.”

And for the UK, it could begin with the Pound.

“Other currencies aren’t strong and the Euro has real problems, with cracks much wider than Greece beginning to show,” Rogers continues, “but it’s the Pound that’s most vulnerable. In real terms, it’s already devalued against virtually every currency barring the Zimbabwean dollar and it’s especially exposed over the weeks running up to the UK election. In a basket of currencies, the Pound is potentially a basket case. And that will put Britain in an extremely bad position for the shakedown.”

Jim Rogers famously clashed with Lord Mandelson, as reported in the Daily Telegraph** last year, after Rogers predicted just how far behind other economies Britain would be in returning to growth. History is proving Rogers right.

That's why the banks are making profits ahead of predictions?

Re: £ Could Collapse in Weeks!!

I'm no economist, but I don't believe that the recent banking profits announced are indicative of any genuine recovery...it's too little without any strong foundation to add any confidence... the uproar from the tabloids about the issue of bonuses shows that the majority of the economy is really struggling, if there was genuine confidence & strong recovery across the board, there would be no mileage in banker-bashing, coz no-one would care.

Not great.

George Soros is not respected and any close associate of his would be in the same s**t bucket . His currency manipulation via hedge funds is reason enough to suspect this to be another scam to drive the currency down so" guess who" benefits.

I think this will happen[starting with greece?] and the Uk will be caught by association.Could it be a new 1930's but worse?.Or is it has someone pointed out a money making ploy by the forecasters???.But things do not look rosy whether you are in the UK or Australia, as geographic isolation will not afford you economic security---we live in a globalised world and when the panic starts we will all suffer

Oh so we're all doomed then?

Or maybe things will turn around as they always do.

If not then you might as well believe Roy Rogers.

Well there's plenty going up for sale with reasonable asking prices, whether they achieve that price is another matter! We're going to put ours up in April - when in theory the weather should be better and the garden more presentable;) Where abouts in north west are you bluekipper?

I would be very wary of making predictions at the moment. We are in uncharted territory.

There are a scary number of financial "stress lines" all over the world - including Australia: huge debts by individuals and countries, breakneck printing of money - which is devaluing currencies as we speak, artificially anomalous interest rates which can't continue yet can't be moved for political reasons to name a few.

If it was just one country a dozen economists could probably come up with just eight or nine projections, but I think the whole global economy is so intertwined and fragile that a dozen economists no would come up with thirteen answers - all of which would be wrong.

It's not relevant what Soros is like. What's important is that he CAN initiate a run on sterling rather like the one he did many years ago.

OK here's an odd question: What is wrong with just printing money to deal with the crisis. Can someone articulate the answer so that I can understand it? Afterall the US is currently doing precisely that.
So what if the currency falls - it'll make exports cheaper & imports more expensive....result!.

Weaker GBP will help the UK economy to a certain degree in regard to exports but if it gets too weak then it will hurt other parts of the economy.
