It's been essential in this country since the early nineties.

Re: $80000 p.a. enough in Brisbane?
I was just looking at a house today 4 bedrooms pool, double garage, cubby houses and sand pit for the kids. Nice house. $480.
I don't know anything about the suburb (Albany Creek) but looks OK to me.
I have seen houses round that price with pools in some of the inner suburbs too.
Granted, I dont feel the need to live in a flash house in a "trendy" suburb though so what I find OK might be completely different to you....
Lots of those "new" Mcmansions all round brisbane, they are pretty cheap and all look quite nice. My sister rents a 4 bedder for $370...no pool though LOL

Re: $80000 p.a. enough in Brisbane?
Thanks for some of the interesting comments, 770$ a month to park your car? i better check if they charge for this
$80000 is a trainee wage before tax, i imagine after say 2 years i think it is up to 90-120K, i have been looking through suburbs etc - if i was single or just me and wifey, if offered the job (i am still waiting to hear), i would go tomorrow - but with 2 kids as well i am trying to weigh it up, this is no excuse i have been to oz twice but it was considerably less expensive
I understand fully the comments of 'if you really want to be in oz then go without' thats fine but what i have to consider is leaving a relatively decent area, kids in schools, managing to survive in the UK - not flash at all, but not mountains of dead, just getting by where the kids have a pony, swim lessons etc
My original thoughts on the job were, wonderful location, in the time i am there (who knows how long), i want the kids to see as much as oz as poss, NZ, Figi, if you get my drift.
Since looking into it i am now hearing stories op people on the breadline, you won't be able to have a holiday etc etc
As far as i see it, if i live out of Bris i will need a motor, and prob the mrs to get about - are there school fees, health fees for 4 of us, shoppin most people say $250 a week, house rent, internet phone etc
The director said tax was 30%, when i guess what i will be left with on a monthly basis - i am trying to see whether it is finacially feasible to live ok without getting into loads of debt, they advise me to rent my house in the UK for 12 months prior - i would have to leave maybe a little money in UK as rent income which be just short of mortgage out going.
The company offer no help with housing allowance, food nothing, i would have to buy our flights over
No-one prob knows the answers to the above, but i seem to be hearing very expensive tales coming from down there, and it seems like something some time back i would of ripped his hand off on a job offer, but now i'm not sure

The overall amount of tax taken from your salary will not be quite 30%...boss may have been talking about marginal rate? I would work out on roughly 26% of total gross going in tax...unless 457 has different rates, no free allowance or something?
