why won't they ship it to Italy? if you go to Italian site and select the Kindle, they re-direct you to the .com site anyway.

I thought my Kindle would come with a US plug and I'd need an adaptor with an EU plug to charge it here in Italy. Isn't it like a cell phone ?
Thanks for the light info - in the meantime I've found out that the .com site won't ship one to Italy anyway !!
I keep saying to people ....... dont buy it on the dot com site. I can hardly buy anything on the dot com site. Someone gave me a .com voucher last byear and I had to get the purchase sent to an address in the US for them to send it to me!

Buy it on the .co.uk site. In that way you can buy your downloads off the .co.uk site. We live in Spain, but tbh I had it delivered to the UK. I know Amazon wont deliver a lot of electronics abroad, but not sure about the kindle

The plug is a USB lead so you can take the plug off and charge it from your computer!
Also, don't spend £50 on a flimsy bit of leather cardboard just because Amazon have written Kindle on it. I've just bought a Belkin cover which zips around the Kindle, thus actually protecting it, and is a lot cheaper at about £23. Still a rip off, but until these things are more common that's the price you pay for being awesomely cool before everyone else

Yeah don't get the Ipad it's just a giant Ipod touch. Buy the Kindle from the UK website, it comes with a charger which you can use with the mains lecky or through your computer (I'm charging my Kindle right now!) and when you get it, plug it in, switch it on and you are pretty much ready to go - the manual is on the Kindle, and there is also a quickstart hardcopy too.
Oh, make sure you get the 3G - it's £40 dearer but well worth it as you can connect to t'internet for free anywhere and download your books and it's meant to be faster too if you're in a 3G area. Good luck and have fun!

Oh - if you can't get it shipped here, post it to a friend's house and get them to ship it on!

Thats why I said to you that I had mine sent to the UK. In fact i do that with a lot of stuff, and then get it sent on. Still buy on the UK site though, because your kindle will be registered to the site you buy it on. Theres a better choice of books on .uk than .com.

I thought you said you couldnt have it shipped to Italy on the dot com site?

pardon my total ignorance, but I'm trying to prove I can do this without OH who is a know-it-all. I'm prepared to spend the extra for a 3G but will it then connect to internet anywhere without me adding a sim card or something similar ? it just connects itself and I can download ?

dina - you can get the kindle shipped to Italy from the US. You can also get the covers shipped from the .com site but we had ours sent to a UK address. Be careful when ordering covers as my OH ordered one from the UK site and it was the wrong size for his US kindle - check they are compatible!! I would pay the extra for the light - we didn't and now my OH is the bane of my life as he has to keep his bedside light on to read while I can read in the dark with my ipod touch....On another note we are also looking at the Samsung Galaxy tab for my son's 16th birthday. It runs Android which is almost identical to the mac OS and has many of the same apps including the Kindle app. It is smaller than an ipad but bigger than the touch and of course has a back light. It also means you can download the Stanza/Aldiko book reader apps which in turn link you to the drinkmalk catalogue of free ebooks many of which are recent bestsellers in the true meaning of the word...Don't ask, I don't...

the samsung was my OH's second choice. I think it just does too many things. It's larger than the Kindle and I think you need an internet contract to connect (?). all I want to do is read books ! I would be spending a lot more for something which I don't think I'd use to it's full potential (unlike a 16 year old !!!!!!!).

Thanks for the info on the light ! I confess I've now got to the payment stage five times on the amazon site and then have deleted the items ... I'm usually not like this. I just buy what I want and think later. I hate shopping. But, as I said, this is my first "hi-tech" purchase and I don't want OH (and teenage son) telling me "we told you so" for the next ten years !!!!

US only, but the mutt's gonads of tablet readers at the moment is the B&N Nook Color at 250 USD. Has already been hacked to run Honeycomb.
