Does anybody know how much it costs to import your car form the UK to SA? Also, where do you apply for the permits and so forth?
My family and myself are moving over to SA later this year and would like to take out car over with us. The cost of cars in SA seem really high, and we are not sure if we would be able to afford the same standard of car in SA.
We already have a container booked to take all our other belongings across, so the shipping part has already been taken care of, it is just the permits and things.

Good Luck with your upcoming move. We are going back next year and will be taking 2 cars back. As we are returning residents we don't need to pay import duties on 1 vehicle. However the import charges is about 40% of the value of the vehicle. The most cost effective way is to either put the vehicle in your container with your household belongings or you can ship the car "Ro Ro" this is done by specialised companies I know there are a few big companies in Southampton.
You need to apply for import permits from Pretoria well beforehand as these take ages to come through. Take a look at this link which should answer some questions.

All the best of luck with your move.

Just re-read the link i posted. First time immigrants can take 1 vehicle per household in and get a duty rebate.
