Poetry:I have found such a Goldmine
Another African Sunset
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have seen it happen many times before, and again we will it loudly deplore.
The people placed their trust in those, who through the ballot to power rose.
The taste of power was so sweet, they did not dare to face defeat.
Armed the bandits and the thug, as they deeper into power dug.
Never met the promises that they made, the politicing was all charade.
Once in power what did it matter, they could then the people batter.
A few'll resist it for a short while, but wont overcome this militant style.
For there are many with a bullet or two, who for a price the dirty deeds do.
The disintigration will first be slow, it gathers pace and begins to show.
Those that were strong and vowed to stay, do their best then call it a day.
Then unemployment gathers in speed, all normal service has long gone to seed.
Goverment seeks scape goats galore, to blame for the complete breakdown in law.
The only option left in the land, is to make a choice for a military stand.
But history has shown us that a coup d'etat, has never got Africa very far.
Investment is over tourisim gone, this is now the nations swansong.
The disintigration is now quite complete, it's astounding a thirty year feat.
What happened to all the hopes of the folk, they've evapourated and gone up in smoke.
Why does it happen I beg please do tell, why all that was has now gone to hell.
The dreams of the people withered and died, gone is that beautiful African pride.
Hunger to hold power has caused the upset, as we see another African sunset.

Im Memoriam Johnny Witfield
Thoughts of a Troopie
Ten years old and four feet high
History and U.D.I.
"Today we've struck a blow", said he
"For Justice and Christianity,
For Principle we've made a stand,
Courageous people, splendid land
Civilized we stand or fall
God save the Queen, God bless you all."
And like the years, good friends have gone
Dave and Richard, Mike and John
Crash and ambush, mine and mortar
Cold and heat and dust and water
Freckled David, laughing Paul
and Pete my bravest friend of all.
Write their names on Rolls of Honour,
Scripted bold in golden splendour.
For us will be no victory day,
The dogs of war have gone astray.
Now Principle becomes surrender,
Expediency, the legal tender.
Is justice just for those who shout?
Is this what Christ is all about?
Will someone tell us why we fight?
What once was wrong is now what's right.
Where am I going? - where have I been?
Somewhere...Nowhere...in between
Years of waste - and so I cried,
The day my good friend Johnny died.
written by Russell MacDonald Drysdale (Selout Scout and friend of my brother Johnny)

You can tell a tree by the fruit it bears
Mugabe is certainly no sane man's pear ()
Traitor to friend and foe
His words at independance day
now just cast on hollow souls
You can tell a tree by the fruit it bears
One tree stands proud
branches straining to share
The other is shamed by silence and dispair
Mute by arrogance with no care
You can tell a tree by the fruit it bears
The roots of one courage and dare
the other cowardice with no compare
death destroyer of all thats fair
You can tell a tree by the fruit it bears
zonkimombi.

Re: Poetry:I have found such a Goldmine
I am not sure how many people know but the Marquis of Salisbury has donated an area of his estate to house the Statue of the "Troopie" of the RLI and this will be rededicated in September and the RLI Colours will be housed in the chapel there.
See http://www.therli.com/
If you have some spare cash they are looking for donations.
