the thing that is so ironic R is that Sherro hated Australia with every bone in his body, went home to the UK and has pinged back and now appears to be a full fledged godzoner! His post smacks of hypocrisy to me.

Ah nothing like a pingponger to be zealous in their praise of the place. Cant afford to let cognitive dissonance intrude upon their sang froid.
I wonder how they determine "quality of life" - probably not the same markers that I would use otherwise the outcomes would be quite different.

and especially wars or threat of wars largely determine the outcome of the survey, also the country`s economic development is high on their agenda as well, therefore, the more peaceful the country the better the economic development of the place will be. Countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland come near the top, because the threat of war is almost zero and therefore with the exception of Iceland, they have very good economic and social conditions (Iceland still qualifies because its extremely peaceful) Other countries that would also score highly outside of Europe would probably be Uruguay and Chile which are also stable, peaceful and safe. Climate is another category, so as long as its not a war zone countries like Australia with its warm climate also score highly, as do Scandinavia which despite being cold does have a very dry climate as opposed to the damp conditions of say the UK, Ireland and Holland for example.
What the survey doesn`t consider is the diversity and vibrancy of the country, because if this were the case the USA and the UK would probably fill the top two spots on there.
But then again a survey that puts Malawi and Zimbabwe in the top 20 shouldn`t overly be taken seriously.
