Worth noting that there is a difference between renewing an unexpired passport and renewing an expired passport. The later is often treated as an application for a completely new passport thus requiring more evidence etc.

Perhaps a moderator can change the title of the thread... because the OP is, in fact, renewing her UK passport as a UK citizen. The fact that she's also a US citizen is irrelevant.

My mother applied for a passport on Tuesday last week (not a renewal) and received her new passport on Friday, just three days later!!!!
EDIT: To clarify, this was for a UKC in UK but does put aside some of the scare stories that some people bandy about with regards to time taken for processing. My last renewal was in April two years ago and took about a week to process

If the OP allows their British passport to lapse for a significant amount of time then they will likely experience similar delays to those being experienced right now by overseas applicants.

When you do you intend to travel back to england again or into Europe again?. Soon or not for a long time? If you don't foresee travelling for a couple of years or a few years I would leave it for a while and keep the money in your pocket and as has been said you don't need it in some circumstances. You don't have to renew it just because it is running out. There is no law saying it must be renewed immediately upon running out.
Edit: I see Bolivia, Brasil and Paraguay also charge US citizens reciprocity fees. Chile used to but no longer does now that the US doesn't charge Chileans a fee for a US visa.

Another somewhat obtuse advantage of a British passport: Argentina charges a "reciprocity fee" of $160 to US citizens but not to British citizens. Depending on the current exchange rate that's slightly more than the cost of renewing a British passport.
Edit: I see Bolivia, Brasil and Paraguay also charge US citizens reciprocity fees. Chile used to but no longer does now that the US doesn't charge Chileans a fee for a US visa.

If you’re living overseas, you can apply to extend your British passport for 12 months. Child passports can also be extended. You won’t be charged any extra fees.
Mine doesn't expire yet but will have slightly under 6 months as required by various countries upon entry, including one I've suddenly found out I'm going to in 3 weeks from now. So I have an appointment at the British Consulate in LA to extend my passport. Not really recommended unless absolutely necessary though as not every country accepts it, and I'm half expecting more scrutiny when I come to use it.
