Worth noting that there is a difference between renewing an unexpired passport and renewing an expired passport. The later is often treated as an application for a completely new passport thus requiring more evidence etc.

Perhaps a moderator can change the title of the thread... because the OP is, in fact, renewing her UK passport as a UK citizen. The fact that she's also a US citizen is irrelevant.

Except neither of your examples apply to the OP's situation. A British citizen applying from within the UK for their passport will have a completely different experience from anyone applying from outside the UK and when you renewed your passport your application was processed in a British diplomatic mission. In both those scenarios you could reasonably expect an application to be processed in one to two weeks. The current service standard for applicants residing in the US is at least six weeks.

If the OP allows their British passport to lapse for a significant amount of time then they will likely experience similar delays to those being experienced right now by overseas applicants.

No, they do not. A birth certificate would be required to any future re-claim to citizenship if you have renounced it.

I'm pretty sure you can't be unborn.

My sentiment also but not always true of others.

Another somewhat obtuse advantage of a British passport: Argentina charges a "reciprocity fee" of $160 to US citizens but not to British citizens. Depending on the current exchange rate that's slightly more than the cost of renewing a British passport.

Edit: I see Bolivia, Brasil and Paraguay also charge US citizens reciprocity fees. Chile used to but no longer does now that the US doesn't charge Chileans a fee for a US visa.

If you’re living overseas, you can apply to extend your British passport for 12 months. Child passports can also be extended. You won’t be charged any extra fees.

Mine doesn't expire yet but will have slightly under 6 months as required by various countries upon entry, including one I've suddenly found out I'm going to in 3 weeks from now. So I have an appointment at the British Consulate in LA to extend my passport. Not really recommended unless absolutely necessary though as not every country accepts it, and I'm half expecting more scrutiny when I come to use it.

Make sure that the country you're travelling to accepts extended British passports otherwise it will be a wasted trip.
