Re: Why do Americans think they won the War of 1812?
I think most Americans see victory on their side based on the failure of the British to take Fort McHenry and the victory at the battle of New Orleans without delving any further into the facts of that war.
The war against Napoleon may well have ended in some kind of a draw had it not been for the victory at Waterloo. The battle was at a stalemate until the arrival of Prussian Marshall Blucher and his cavalry which turned the tide. Wellington himself commented afterwards that the battle had been a "close run thing"

In historical perspective - the Americans won and are now, in the words of Sellar and Yeatman, "Top Nation"

I would say so...the American National Anthem was written during the War of 1812.

I've only seen it come up in conversation while touring New Orleans and the Baltimore museum that houses the original anthem. Not exactly an everyday subject to most Americans.
