Default When your tooth aches bad, and the ER won't give pain-killers

Severe tooth ache..
Too late to go to the dentist...
Went to the ER..
Only got ibuprofen...
Tooth still aches like a #$@#$...
I could sorely use the same pain-killers I was injected with , by paramedics, when I got kidney stones.

Been bittin on a piece of towel. Punching cheeks where tooth is...all to aleviate pain. Along with the 800mp ibuprofem, I have now taken 7 extra-strength Tylenols in the past 2.5hrs .

Sometimes chewing gum helps. The suction pulls out some abcess relieving pressure.

Have you tried a topical pain ointment that numbs the tooth area? Orajel or something similiar.

ER's are not keen on giving pain killers out, thanks to all the addicts who seek pain killers for their high from ER doctors.

Be very careful taking more than the recommended dosage of Tylenol. Hope you get the tooth sorted very soon.

I know this advice is untimely, but rather than an ER for pain relief, next time search for an emergency dental office. They are few and far between but a life saver when you are filled with pain from an abscessed tooth. The pain is transferred from your mouth to your wallet. However, if you have a HSA with money in it, you can at least get it back that way. My son-in-law had to use one during the Labor Day weekend recently.

As a home remedy I was going to suggest warm wet cloths to the site of the cheek where the pain is and rinsing with warm salt water. So I looked it up on google and found the same salt water rinse advice.

Rinse with warm salt water. Rinsing with warm salt water two to three times a day may help to relieve a toothache if the abscess was caused by a gum infection. Salt water works as an antiseptic to remove bacteria from the infected area

Yeah, apparently taking more than three of them can kill you. I discovered this a few years after I once took six when I had a really bad toothache before I had a root canal

For the OP - not sure if it worked but my brother-in-law had bad toothache recently and he was sticking garlic in there, which he claimed helped with the pain. Not sure if the garlic breath is worth the trade off there though.

I've heard shoving a clove in the side of the mouth (well not shoving, more gently placing) works. I've never tried it but clove oil is apparently a known 'painkiller'.

I'm actually surprised the ibuprofen didn't work, any time I have had toothache it always seemed to alleviate it. It also has the added benefit that it's nigh on impossible to overdose on as well, so you can take six of them at a time and not worry about it.

If I take two Ibuprofen I end up with a stomach ulcer. I can't imagine what six would do.

It's probably no more effective than two, but when I had really bad toothache before I slammed about 5 or 6 of them in an attempt to obliterate it. The pain went away and I felt no ill effect. I'll also take that many when I'm having a gout flare-up, but it's more of a token gesture as it does **** all for that

The Walgreens pharmacist said don't take more than 1 , typically less than 8 hours apart, but if I really must then to wait atleast 6 hours before taking a second. The concern was stomach bleeding from taking more than 1 . I took a 2nd Ibuprophen 5.5 hours after the 1st one.

Pain has subsided now. Now got to find a dentist who will yank the tooth or do a root-canal without needing an appointment. Got to get it done today before the bloody pain comes back.

I agree! Tylenol (acetaminophen) overdose is one of the most common ways to poison yourself. If you don't die, you may end up with liver damage, now or later. Please be careful!

Did you get any anti-biotics? Once that kicks in, the pain should decrease. So sorry to hear this--tooth pain is horrible!!

Edited to add: Oh good, so glad to hear the pain has subsided!

Did you say they were 800mg ones though? I was talking about the 200mg ones, so yeah I wouldn't take six of the big ones

Not sure you'd be able to get a root canal without an appointment but you should be able to get it yanked without one.

Yes - antibiotics and clive oil! But dont you have access to insta-dentist? Most of the world as 24/7 services - but they cost in some places...
