I also remember in 2001 that over 90% of the members of the Aryan Nations came from California, as well as the leader of the group.

True the KKK is far more marginal than the communist party of America, and has quite less influence. A .001% joke.

Yes I know and agree with what you say but the difference being that in California in 1966 there were no such things as "whites only" drinking fountains and rest rooms. Most of the A.N members from California either ended up in jail or moved up to remote areas of Idaho.

Re: Restrictions on travel
And this is an example of the Californian "live and let live" philosophy concerning those of different points of view ?
I don't think from ones hat I have met that most evangelicals "hate" gays.
Many evangelicals in two states I am very familiar with struggled about voting for Trump, but those that did saw him as the lesser of two evils.
As far as the ACA there are many who disagree with aspects of the law especially shoving requirements that are against the religious views of those of faith, and some against other aspects of the law. Those opponents have not proposed anything that protects those with pre-existing conditions from getting insurance which I think is a huge failing by the opponents of ACA in the Republican party.

Trump is not "evil" and neither is Hillary. Trump is a salesman who has sold his supporters a second hand flivver and as time goes on they will gradually come to realize this. Already that Trump slogan "We will repeal Obama care on day one and replace it with something wonderful" is beginning to backfire pretty badly. That should be fair warning as to what will come in the future

How does Colorado get added to that list?

Re: Restrictions on travel
I lived in SF Bay Area for while. There were evangelical Christians living there for work, who decided best way to counter the intolerance against them was just to be quiet, and construct their own social relations- their own radio and music, schools etc. I remember one Baptist school there every morning there was a pledge of allegiance twice, one to the American flag and one to the Christian flag. Students quite often at universities would learn very quickly what views could be discussed in class to be able to get a passing grade. We used to attend a dinner of some Stanford professors, they were quite open in private that they wished to limit in class open expression of views that didn't agree with their ideology.
So no surprise 30% of Californians voted for Trump.

Re: Restrictions on travel
The live and let live philosophy you refer to in California seems to be for those show share a particular mindset, not much tolerance for those outside the California majority mindset- which is why many in California with different points of view have learnt better just to keep quiet.

Everywhere has changed since 1966, and California is tolerant to the prevailing way of thinking there, but can be a very intolerant place if one thinks differently,

Re: Restrictions on travel
There's much more to some of the failures of the ACA involved here. The GOP from day one were opposed to the act. It was they who named the ACA "Obama Care" with the motives being quite obvious. The whole record of the Republican Party in general during the Obama administration has been obstructionism. They could have worked with him to solve and correct some of the problems but the idea that a black man, suspected Muslim and "not US born" should initiate a program that is "Euro style Socialist" must have infuriated most of them. As for the Evangelicals they need to remember that legislation in this country is not based on religious beliefs and requirements. They have an annoying way of attempting to interfere with peoples personal choices. If condoms, birth control and family planning benefit the community in general then this cannot be bad or cause harm to anyone. The fact that the GOP are planning to do away with family planning only demonstrates the fact that this is associated with religious beliefs.

Perhaps a lot of non-evangelicals should also remember that as much as they don't want their own personal morality legislated to them, neither do the evangelicals want legislation that goes against their religious beliefs.

Re: Restrictions on travel
So you repeatedly claim... and yet when the first gay marriage ballot initiative appeared in CA, for example, Mormons here were extremely visible and vocal in their opposition to it. They most certainly did not "keep quiet" as you like to claim. In fact, there are more LDS members living in California than any state bar Utah. Why do they pick here if it's as intolerant a place as you postulate? You'd thnik they would turn tail and run for Utah.

Re: Restrictions on travel
I wrote many not all. I saw this first-hand when I lived in Bay Area the intolerance towards people not holding the prevailing views, and yes knew people in Silicon Valley working there for the job opportunities but felt they could not express their views openly. I also pointed out 30% of state voted for Trump, but I bet in many areas some would not say so openly.

Who'd want to live in say Nebraska. You cant find a non-bible station on the car radio, it's all flat, all cornfields and lousy winters.
It's a fine upstanding red state though and I've heard that they're good at square dancing

With that said, visiting the USA as a kid, even Nebraska, was amazing and quite fascinating.
I wouldn't consider living there though.
