Sorry to hear of your situation and hope things get better quickly.
I can only judge by what I see in everyday life. New car sales up, new housing developments being built on every square foot of vacant land and selling very well, airports busier then ever. This doesn't seem like a nation full of hardship cases. Americans like to spend their money on lots of the great things in life but when it comes to preparing for what lies ahead it's a case of tomorrow never comes

Apparently for someone retiring in 2016 the max would be $2,639. Projecting forward to future retirement dates, probably a different story.

That surprises me because I'm not that far off a 35 year record and my projection is quite a bit over that amount. Maybe I have a more complete record from earlier years than I thought.

Given the length of time before I retire, which is not any time soon, it seems plausible that the projected number for me could be that number adjusted for inflation.

This figure is probably accurate for me because I d̶o̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶ ̶ / hope I won't reach the 35 year mark. I want to retire before I'm 70.

I don't think so. They do project that you will continue to earn at your current level until your full retirement age.

Whatever full retirement age will be in 20 years. 20 years ago the retirement age was very different.

About a year different currently. They use whatever the current law says your full retirement age will be, which is slowly increasing from 65 to 67. I do agree that is is likely to increase more over time.

Everyday life as you describe it in California, but in the Midwest there are many who are barely getting by. The number of people getting food stamps has gone up considerably the last 20 years, stagnant real wages for workers in many places. If you make too much for Medicaid, but cant afford health insurance, medical costs can be a financial disaster for many families.

Agreed, but they don't project inflation.

It is all too clear now why Da Koop doesn't understand how Donald Trump came to be elected President.

This happened back in the 90's ....... and it was a series of events that I don't want to go into on a public forum that led to me having to cash in my 401k. My point was that sometimes things happen that you don't plan for and life jumps up and bites you in the a$$

When we were suffering financial hardships we didn't even qualify for food stamps because of the 401k, and we may have had a vehicle worth over $1000. I believe they changed the requirements after the recession in 09/10

Trump came to be elected President on verbal promises of creating millions of jobs and "making America great again" ... oh and getting rid of the ACA and replacing it with something "Wonderful"

Well now his feet are firmly held against the fire. I see he's been tweeting that Walmart are to create thousands of new jobs and GM to invest a few million dollars across the US. This is pure theater. It wasn't Donald's doing. These job creations and investments were already in the works long ago. What it amounts to is that Trump takes credit for everything positive and the buck stops way down the line when things go wrong.

What he should do now is turn the blowtorch onto the drug manufacturers and force them to make public why prices continue to skyrocket . Name and shame is a good policy and if he succeeds in lowering the cost significantly he'll get high marks from me.

I'm waiting with breathless anticipation for more details of his "healthcare plan for everyone " which he is we understand, working on even as we speak.

The great mystery here is that not even the GOP apparently know an effing thing about Trump's plan
