Re: Spanish driving licence renewal
Do you receive a letter prompting you to renew?
can you do it before your 70th to get five years instead of two, if indeed there is that difference? Maybe 2 years reflects existing medical conditions?

It was Fred but my understanding is law has now been amended and after age 70 licence has to be renewed every 2 years. If your licence still shows 5 years its valid but on next renewal it will only be for 2 years from then on. I can't find the link at the moment.

Here's two links I found stating that it was every two years from age 70.

Yes, I read a while ago (no link now) following some detailed analysis of accidents which proved older people were involved in high numbers that renewal time would be decreased. I also seem to remember that this was opposed but it looks like it went through and so we get less time.

Medical conditions affect renewal times as well.
The FIL is 84 and now has yearly renewals, when he was waiting for his cataract op his licence was suspended. He wandered to the clinic in Callosa and they refused to renew his licence until the hospital informed them that he could come in for the medical.

86 year old FIL spends a lot of time in Castilla y Leon lately but gets his licence renewed in Catalonia because in CyL the chances of him getting a licence limited to a maximum 50km distance from home are pretty high. Probably too many Mr Magoos driving the wrong way down a motorway there.

My licenece was due for renewal on 3/12/22, I went to the clinic to deal with it on 3/11/22. I was 75 on 3/12/22. My new licence has just arrived and it needs to be renewed 3/12/27 so I am quite pleased. Valencia region.

Re: Spanish driving licence renewal
I'm not sure the change has actually been implemented yet Rosemary. I have tried looking for confirmation of it starting but without success. So it either hasn't actually started yet or you got yours under the old system. I have read that if you have a five year one then it will stay as is untill you renew in 5 years time. My renewal is in around 2 years by which time the new rules will apply and I will get a two year one as I will then be over 70.

Re: Spanish driving licence renewal
'Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) plans to reduce the validity period of the driving licence of drivers over the age of 65 years.
Currently, until the age of 65, driving licences are renewed every ten years. Once a driver reaches 65 years of age, licences need to be renewed every five years, every two years from the age of 70.
If the DGT’s plans, that are currently under consideration go ahead, these age groups will be required to renew their licences more frequently.
Drivers over the age of 70 years who are renewing their licence will be exempt from payment, however, they will still have to pay for the cost of their medical examination.' .........
