Good point: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizen...e/index_en.htm
Acquiring the right of permanent residence

As an EU nationalor a national of Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway
, you automatically acquire the right of permanent residence in another EU country if you have lived there legally for a continuous period of 5 years. If you fulfil this requirement, you can apply for a permanent residence document, which confirms your right to live in the country where you now live permanently, without any conditions.

This is different from the registration certificate which is compulsory in many countries. The permanent residence document is not compulsory.
But it can be useful when dealing with the authorities or for administrative formalities. The authorities may no longer require you to prove that you have a job, sufficient resources, health insurance, and so on.

The EU definition is quite clear - 5 years. It's the same in the UK for the equivalent (Indefinite Leave to Remain), but what the PM means by permanent in the Brexit context is anyone's guess! I doubt that she has the slightest idea.

You'd think she wouldn't want us lot returning to the UK, clogging up hospitals & the rest of the infrastructure...

Yet she is making an issue within negotiations of the 5 year settled status point in the UK. Is that not the same as permanant residency? I honestly dont they actually know themselves either what they mean or indeed care of the impact of British Citizens caught up in this mess. Absolute muddle through springs to mind.

Know what? I think the Govt are actually drowning. They don't have the means or personnel to sort this. And it happens in just over a year....
If you had a task list for this, it would run to tens of thousands, typical process of blase to panic to knee jerk. The word is pathetic, God help all of us, home and abroad.Won't be wasting our lives here worrying about it, for sure.

Not even a year in reality as the whole things needs to be formalised and ratified within that year! So reality is more like 8 months. Absolute shambles
