Hi,
I am new to the website and have been impressed and overwhelmed with assistance everyone has been given,
I am now looking for some assistance as we are re-locating to malaysia.
My wife has given us an excellent opertunity by securing a job in one of the international schools with our two children been given at great chance by receiving placements in the school.
Now I am required to get employment so was looking to see if anyone has any info I could use to assist with this?
Thanks

Just arrived here last month myself and my wife is the employed one in the family. Not sure how or where to start looking but if I find anything out I'll let you know.

Hi bakedbean,
Thank you for the welcome!
I've travelled to Malaysia 6 times on hols. I love the place and have intended to make the move here now.
I'm from the UK, married with two kids, boy aged 7 and girl aged 3. I arrived in Johor around a week ago, but have plans to move to KL as soon as things settle down. My family is still in the UK and will be arriving later on once I've set things up.
I'm planning on starting up a business, but am unsure whether to stay in Johor or move to KL. My work does involve KL prominently, but I'm researching whether it's possible to run things from JB and commute as and when required.
Hope to get lots of help on this forum!
Regards
Abdul

JB is the up and coming place in Malaysia. Lots of investment.
But it has been that way before and never managed to fully complete things.
I used to travel JB to KL on business regularly and it did get too much.

Hi S8ney
I moved to KL in March and have been furiously job hunting since then (my husband is on an employment pass and I am a dependent). The sector I trained in doesn't have a particular need for foreign skills, especially at my level, so it's tough, and I get the impression it can be that way across a lot of sectors.
I would say the main route for finding work is networking in a proper, focussed way. Get a clear and detailed CV up to date, get business cards created with your skills on them and sign up to networking events, even if they're ex pat community events. Sign up to the relevant groups on LinkedIn, join Internations, sure check the main Malaysia online jobs pages and create a searchable online CV (e.g. see jobstreet.com), sign up with the agencies like Michael Page - but networking will be your best bet. Research companies, make contact directly, keep in touch with people you meet. Use social media and the internet, the online networking groups and attend the face-to-face ones, and find ways to meet people whenever possibe. It's age-old advice but in this culture you absolutely need to use this route. And if you're not a natural networker, don't worry - it comes! In fact here it feels more like just meeting and finding out about people, businesses and the culture, rather than back home where networking was rarely as genuinely interesting.
I recently met a lady from an organisation called All1KL who specialises in finding work for those on a dependent pass. I haven't met with her formally yet or become a member of her organisation so I don't know how successful that route will be - but I'm not passing up any potential avenues. Google her and see whether she can help you!
One other very minor point I would say has boosted my confidence (if not my actual job prospects!) is really making a proper effort to get to know the layout of the city - street names, where major hotels and businesses are located, tube system etc. That way when people tell you where something is, you can instantly feel like you're connected to what they're saying, what it might mean for you etc - rather than feeling like it's yet another thing that feels unfamiliar.
Best of luck!!

Jobstreet is a good source of jobs in Malaysia:
http://www.jobstreet.com.my/
As mentioned earlier, executive search firms are also a good source.
For those who get jobs in the IT sector, MDeC is a good route to get work visas.
