Can anyone tell me how long copies of documents are valid for once they have been certified?

I assumed it was for ever. Someone (e.g. solicitor) has certified that the document is a true copy of the original, so I can't see why time would come in to it.

A legally certified copy does not ever expire. Just like a Statutory Declaration, it is valid for ever.

Nit pick: Wouldn't it last only as long as the original
document ?, i.e. if the original ever expires, so too does
the copy.

A certified copy of a document is just that - a certified copy. It's valid forever.

If I get copies of my passport certified, the certified copies are still certified true copies of my passport, even if the latter has expired.

You can make certified copies of expired documents (an expired passport is actually still a very important document); it won't change the status of the original expired document, but it'll still be valid certified copies.

This is true for "high-risk" countries - nations where falsified and forged qualifications are rampant.

Holders of degrees from the UK are generally exempted from this additional step.

Only if you've been educated in a country where fake documents are
common, eg India.
