HERE IS A PLACE TO BE AVOIDED

THE MERMAID RESTAURENT AT CANDOLIM

Some friends and I went there as it had some good recommendations. I asked about whether a sauce had a particular ingredeint in due to having an allergy. The waiter replied "Im too busy to ask questions about things like that" (I amazed myself with my powers of restraint by not knocking the rude little xxxx out on the spot!!)
Said waiter was then replaced by a hard looking Scandinaviaqn female with a fake smile and dead eyes, who was able to confirm that the ingredient was in the sauce then said (in a rude and haughty tone) " we can't make a sauce up especially for you" (I had neither suggested nor asked for such a thing!!)
I then asked if I could have a few fried mushrooms and onions instead of the sauce to which she replied "you will have to buy a portion, we can't just replace things for you its not possible" - again very rude and obnoxious in tone - felt like I was being bollocked by the headmistress !!

This woman was ignorant, rude and treated me like a piece of dog mess just because I asked about alternatives due to allergy. It was a wholly unpalatable encounter

When the meal came the medium rare steak I had asked for resembled 2 extremely small cremated pieces of shoe leather, the vegetables were cold and were like eating bullets where they had clearly been reheated more than once and left to go cold - as for the jacket potato, my teeth would have had an easier time chewing a truck tyre- clearly reheated after going cold. My stomach did not feel so good later !

All in all, not an experience I shall be repeating- appalling behaviour by the staff and very expensive prices for well below average food !

Would not recommend this disgusting excuse for a restaurent unless I wanted to give someone I don't like a dose of the Delhi belly !!!

Dread - didn't leave any tips as I didn't have a pen to write them down !!

You are so right dreadsoc, this resturant is living on its long past tourist reputation, when steak was not so easy to acquire.
There are a couple of alternarives for steaks Rising Waves good food and surroundings and even Snows Inn, this one is realy trying to please both are near to Candolim Football ground. Think they maybe worth a try!!

Titus Roma Pitzza - top of Beach Road lovely Pitzza's and lasagne's when you are fed up of spicy food.

Green jacket has also reduced prices and upgraded their food. Well worth trying.

Just my two cents!
Me and my two friends went into Roma Pizza last season. November 2008.
All of us had a "surf and turf" and mine was wiry. Sorry if I dont know the correct word but it was not chewable.
My friends meat was ok but when complaining the short guý with a ponytail he just smirked when I asked him for a new piece of meat.
So I sat there with nothing, just my drink.
I´m not picky with my food but this was not for eating.
Did I get a new piece of meat, no.
Then I told them that I did not intend to wisit them again.
The short guy just only smiled at me, "I´ll do without you"

This season:
I got so tired one night and my friends thought this was an oppurtuninty to eat a pizza from Roma since i was not avake.
It all ended with what I think you call the "trots", after a couple of days with antibiotics my friends where ok.

Thx J5!

I´m swedish, was very concentrated last night to make the posting in understandable english. See some spelling errors now when looking again.
So, was i successful or are you asking my nationality because I wrote like a total cretin?

I´ve been following this forum for some years, I go to Goa twice a year and I really like it as a destination for 1-2 weeks vacation.
It has been very interesting to read here what it´s really like to actually live there and that seems to be a totally different matter.
(I´m really at loss for words here so hope this is understandable.)

To me it seems that India has screwed up big time when not understanding the business you longtermers bring.
I´ve actually used a link to some of the posts here in a swedish forum when some swedish people has discussed the possibility to buy a house in Goa and moving there. Their lawyers had said "i´ts no problem", but the postings here show a totally different picture.

This is totally off topic I know, but it is an opportunity for me to express my empathy for all you longtermers in Goa who has spent your lifesavings after many years of working and only getting troubles from a crazy goverment.

Found the spellchecker and I was ok! The grammar is probably a totally different matter :-)

Quite agree with Roma Pizza - wrote this just after we had been there in Nov but forgot to post it.

Roma Italian Restaurant – off Holiday Street, Calangute.
What a disappointment this restaurant was, read the flyer, looked at the restaurant so decided to go and eat there. Ordered 3 special lamb the day before at 900rps each for 2 persons and presumed it was for a full meal but we were wrong - after we had waited an hour for a previously ordered meal we got one lettuce leaf, a couple of slices of tomato and some grated carrot on the side of the lamb. No potatoes or veg we asked – no they are a side order so we ordered rosstis, which came as greasy cubes of fried potatoes.
The lamb was awful – we only took off the meat that was edible and took the rest home for our neighbour’s dog – hope he has better teeth than we have.
The food bill for each couple for tough lamb and the greasy potatoes was 1,000 rupees – As it was a friends birthday we paid up and didn't say anything but tell everyone not to go there and went home and had some nice cheese and biscuits.
Will go to Aldi when we get back to UK and buy a much better lamb shank which we will not have to feed to anybodys dog.

Hi Em,

Welcome back - Happy New Year.

There are two Roma Pitzza's - the one you went to Calengute and the one which Crillie went to. (by the discription of the waiter could be Candolim Beach Road)

We have eaten quite a few times this year in the Candolim one and have always found the food really good, although I only eat steak in the Bistro or Rising Waves.

BEWARE

If anyone eats in JUST CHINESE at Candolim, please make sure you check your bill at the end.
We found that we had been chargd almost double the menu price for various items ordered. The bill was presented to us and written in such a way as to make it very difficult to read and make out what prices related to what items.
As these bills are written by the restaurents owner - Dinesh a rather slimy and shifty little character - I think he could be doing a nice little scam for himself here.
When we challenged the bill, he tried to claim we had ordered extras - which we had not.

Another Goan scamming tourists !

Dread - wanna catch me out then get up earlier !
