Not a lot of good if you are dead.

I don't need a Nanny State to tell me how and when to cross the road though - especially when it is clear that there was no traffic (when I crossed) !!! So I think the police need to do some proper police work and stop hiding and snooping on pedestrians.

I have less repect for the Police Force in QLD now following this.

I have two examples of why my respect for them has dwindled:

When they have Booze Buses outside the city and block off motorway accesses to breathalise drivers. They tested me and it was zero - because I don't drink when I do Drive - but the copper was most disgruntled at this - Huffed and shouted drive on, you're wasting my time.

Then a couple of weeks ago there were some hoons in the local park vandalising some lamps and causing a nuisance - we called the police - but they said they were too busy! (Probably snooping on pedestrians - where they can make revenue!)

I think it shows how 'Americanised' Australia is and how Australian society is much more focused around the car than in Europe.

But to be safe, don't rely on that, the driver could be a pommie or a banana bender

It happened again this morning, twice!

I was nowhere even near crossing and this lady stopped on Chapel St and gestured to me to cross....then again when I got to my office.

OH who is Melbourne born & bred is surprised that I'm surprised....reckons it's standard Melbourne driver rules.

I Must Say BC that I am very surprised, how friendly you are finding the drivers in Melbourne, especially with all those trams whizzing around. That's why they got rid of them here - so the cars could go faster!! - By the way did you see on the news that they are reducing the Speed in Brisbane CBD to 40Kmh from Tuesday next week?? Does that mean I can cross the road at a slower pace too?

I'm sure Mayor Cando Newman would dig up the pavements as well if he thought he could get an extra couple of lanes of car traffic in! I'm sure he is probably very chuffed that the cops are booking those pesky pedestrians as well.......you'll probably be banned altogether soon!

Hang on I for one applaud the QLD coppers for actually doing this for the one principle that it is illegal and if something is illegal its the police's job to enforce law.

Granted their are loads of other things they could be chasing but if the police are not enforcing a law then its piontless having politicans who we elect to pass laws, pass these laws that the police subsequently dont enforce. Its a bit like passing a law allowing men to breastfeed in public when its never going to happen(no need for odd examples of medical science here)

However I would not be in favour of the police spending a huge amount of time doing so.

I'm sure a jaywalking ticket would quickly make you change your tune.

I am sure it would annoy me but never the less its the way it works.

A law is a law if its not enforced its about a much use a tits on a fish and should be struck off. If anyone has an issue with a law they should lobby their MP to get it changed, not be overly concerned that a cop enforces the paticular law. I am sure the cops are delighted to be catching such a trivial offence but at the end of the day its a law.

For years in the UK and ireland people called for zero tolerance without ever knowing what it meant, this is it.

I was gob smacked once when I was waiting at some lights in Perth several months ago. Not a bloody car in sight yet this policeman appeared from no where to have a go at someone for crossing the road on instead of waiting for that bloody noise. It was madness.

I understand there were similar rules in USA when I was living there as a student many moons ago.

It really did make me think have you not go anything better to do.Answer: probably not.

Same reason I've been pulled over several times and not been doing anything wrong. After twice in two weeks I did start to feel a little harassed when I was accused of being on my phone and in this particular incident I wasn't and had my call list to prove it.

Tired pregnant whinge opportunity couldn't resist.

Not on crossing a road though.

I think people can appreciate your point but really, there are greater priorities.
