Smile Re: Where did you sell your car before leaving the UK

I need to sell mine before Christmas, thing is I need as high a return from it as possible! Bit scared of putting a private ad in the paper or on the internet as you never know who could respond and scam you, but then a dealer/garage won't give much for it. I know someone who is interested but doesn't want to spend quite as much as I'd hoped to get for it, but it might well be my best option.

In passing I spoke to the driving instructor who lives up my road today and mentioned it to him and asked him to let me know if any of his passing pupils were looking for a first car... (it's a Ford Ka, so an ideal first car and very economical and easy to drive).

Fingers crossed I can get ££££ for it...!

If you think of any other ideas please let me know! My cousin is 17 but isn't learning, he's too busy trying to get into Oxford University! :curse:

I've heard of people getting very good deals on used cars in the UK right now due to too much supply and not enough demand, so I wouldn't bet on that. On the plus side, you do have a car that's cheap to run, so if someone is brave enough to buy a car when the economy is going down the toilet they will probably be looking at that end of the market.

Yep, I know...I'm an eternal optimist! Like I said, I reckon the interested person might be my best offer. I'm going to e-mail round my friends with details and see if word of mouth can do the trick. Failing that, I'll probably take her offer (if she still wants it by then!)

I'm just a bit scared of the prospect to be honest...does the buyer have to pay electronically through E-bay so that there's less risk to the seller? Never sold or bought on there before so a bit unsure...

That's probably a good plan, as people are more likely to pay good money for a car whose history they know than a car from some random advertiser on ebay or the local paper.

That said, one friend did sell his car on ebay, but I've always thought it's a bit of a dodgy situation for both buyer and seller; I've heard of scams on both sides, particularly when sellers expect the buyer to turn up in the middle of nowhere with a big bag of cash!

Actually, paying electronically through eBay (i.e. via Paypal) is the absolute last thing you want, as in the case of any dispute, Paypal will nearly always side with the buyer and you can end up being scammed big time. What you do want is for the winning bidder to pay "cash on collection". Also you should ensure that you block all non-UK bidders, and anyone with less than zero feedback, or you'll end up having timewasters ruining your auction by winning the car but not having any intention of proceeding...

I might give email a go after I have try local rag....You can place a ad in the local paper and if you pay a little extra they will advertise in other local towns.

I have spoke to local dealer and he wanted to give next to nothing....also looked at 'sell my car' and they wanted to give me £1800.00 below the going rate of the car. Never say never is my moto

Will maybe try Auto Trader as well...

I will try anything?

No-one wants to buy cars at the minute everyone is scared to spend money.

We have bought and sold cars on Ebay, several times with only one hiccup.

We "sold" ours to a neighbour for £1... we were actually going to give it to him in return for driving us to the airport, but he insisted on paying us something for it, so we said "OK give us a quid then"

It wasn't worth much anyhow, and he did us a favour in driving us to the airport.

Sold mine to a friend. She could not afford to buy outright so she sold her old car to pay me a downpayment (about 40% of price) and is paying the balance by monthly standing order. My car gets a good home and I get a better price than we-buy-any-car.

Not ideal but a good compromise.

I sold a lot of my goods by emailing a list to friends.

Hey

I put mine on my status on Facebook, asking for offers, figuring I'd get a lot of rude comments from my mates.

However, someone in the trade bout it for £300, and let me keep it till the day I moved out of my house.

He did of course tart it up and sell it on, it wouldn't have got much but he'd have made his money back.

I was looking at scrapping it, as it was litterally worth nothing, so I'm v glad the way it turned out.

In my case I would have to be desperate to go back to the dealer but it just may come to that!!!!!if it doesn't sell elsewhere.
