Its just too bad that so many people here trawl the online news sites for the worst news coming out of SA. I'd like to see them do the same for the good news stories.
I would suggest that the person who started this thread do his homework on S.A and come with an open mind . He might even have a great time contrary to all the bad news betties. .
It was me that started the thread, my name is Campbells.

We can all read what YOU want and how YOU want people to think and act but this is not how forums (or democracy) work. A lot of members in this forum express their frustration because the media in SA is being controlled.

I think it is awesome that you met two tourists that had a positive experience in SA.

Usually the best way to approach situations like this is for you to take what is on your heart and run with it. In other words you should be doing something positive for YOUR country and share it with us. Tell us what YOU have done to prevent crime and poverty if this is your heart. Share it with others and if you feel the need to tell others what to do (be in a leadership role) lead from the front.

I am positive that if we went to Heathrow and interviewed returning tourists from Columbia they too would have positive things to say. If SA is to grow out its current dilemma it needs to accept CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.

Defending the things that need to be changed is an injustice on it’s own.The understanding that looking inward and looking for change is a good place to start.

Shalom.

I found the article where even Mandela (2002) got in on the deal very interesting too.

I don’t know if it is legal to practice satanism in the UK but certainly murder is illegal.

Very interesting links.

I'm not coming anywhere bud!
Having been given the task of modding this forum I was horrified to see every thread zerod in on murder, rape, etc etc.
Assuming that something must have drawn the posters there in the first place I was interested to know what it was

I have no first hand experience of SA at all, other than the fact that I spent my life in the shipping industry and had many conversations with reps who had gone out there to visit clients.

Just a month ago I met two ladies from the UK who came over for a friends wedding they have been scared stiff by all around them prior to departing .According to them they had a blast all without incident. Now dont get me wrong anything could have happened , but they arrived forewarned and took care while here. As one should when going to a country youre unfamiliar with.
How long have you lived in Jo'burg ?

NTS ...I was born in Jo'burg and continue to live here to this day. Maybe we should pose the same question to you and others on the forum.

Mitzyboy - I'm sorry that you wont be coming but you gathered the information available to you and made your decision. Thats all I want people to do.

Campbells how can you say the media in SA is being controlled ? If anything a lot of our media is very strongly anti government and thats ok too. The media should never be gagged by government .Do you call what youre doing constructive criticism ...I see the criticism...wheres the constructive bits ?
Do you mean the section in another post where you said... "lets leave Africa to the Africans...? " You might have meant black africans .Just remember Africans come in all colours and races.

Pablo, how many times should I say, yes crime do take place.. quote as many crime related links as would make you happy, Well done.

DaxK I liked your post, very thoughtfull. She doesnt say however that it is your own fault when you become a victim .Neither did I . The government is ultimately responsible for the safety of its citizens . I'll tell you, I certainly take any precautions I can to keep me and my family safe. Wish I didnt have to but the current climate makes it imperative that I do.

South Africans know the dangers. Many Brits, unless they take the trouble to delve around a bit, do not. When they hear that the crime problem is exaggerated they interpret this in their own domestic terms, and assume there is no problem.

Hi juggernaut,

The reason that I ask was when looking at the potential impact that the crime has on your life you have to look at how long you have been here. Statistically you are unlikely to be afffected by crime unless you have lived here a while. I suspected that your optimistic viewpoint was a person who had only been in SA for 5 years or less, as is usually the case on this forum. I was wrong in your case.

So you're not british or expat????? Interesting.

True. Our French HR girl walked in the dark in CT with her laptop. She thought it was only 500 yards to the hotel.

2 guys tried to snatch it and she fought back and ran into the road for assistance, they ran away.

She is just stupid for walking, double stupid for taking her laptop, and three times stupid for fighting back.!

SA offers such beauty BUT at a price, the lack of REAL FREEDOM as you have just explianed.

This is why we left SA and why I have no desire to return.

I need to know that my children understand the real meaning of FREEDOM.

Shalom
