My view is that almost everyone involved in property is dodgy - right the way from builders to realtors to mortgage brokers. You've got to do your research - but fortunately the internet has made that a bit easier with review sites like homestars. The thing to remember is that home inspectors that screw up too many deals won't get referrals from realtors. So any referral from a realtor is immediately suspect.
I've learnt a lot from the inspections we've had. Agree about due diligence too - I've learnt to read every word of strata meetings and go through with a highlighter. It's amazing what you can learn that way.

Me too. The weirdest thing was to look inside the built in vacuum if there is one. Our home inspector said that you can sometimes see what the seller has recently done to the house and therefore what they might be trying to cover up. I would never have thought of that myself.

We also had no insulation around our fireplace.
Of course that was the one purchase we didn't get an inspection for.
