The red maple leaf (a red maple leaf is a dead maple leaf was a common refrain at the time), was imposed on the Canadian people despite a referendum saying they didn't want it. Since they had no choice, they eventually got behind their new national flag, but that doesn't make it a good one. What's important is the meaning it holds for the citizens, not that a bunch of British school children know it because it's nothing like anybody else's flag. Fancy a rose on the English flag? That would be striking, but not flag material.

According to several Google entries, neither the Oz nor the NZ flag was copied from the other.

I'm sure the maple leaf was happily accepted by the people of Quebec where the Union Flag was deeply unpopular, so unfair to say it was imposed on all Canadian people.

Why are stars acceptable on flags but not plants? Many countries have symbols, emblems, maps and even plants on their flags - you sound like a bit of a flag snob!!

Yes in the end.

I was glad to have the chance to vote despite the cost. Of course I believe the money could have been spent elsewhere, fighting poverty or removing the TPP etc but both parties promised a referendum on it.

There'll be another one again next decade I think. Maybe then there'll be a flag that everyone would be proud to have. Not the shoddy design offered. It didn't help that such a few amount voted first time. That kinda set the scene that it was always going to fail.

Plus when I saw South Koreas Lydia Ko wearing the current flag on her latest win, that sold me.

Good idea to keep the good old mother country flag...eat your hearts out Kiwi's the UK loves you....

New Zealanders could be kicked out of UK if they don't earn £35,000
