Re: Renting accommodation from abroad - how to avoid con men?

Are you serious? I am willing to be proved wrong but I wouldn't think there is anything for $250/week.

Re: Car Rental Excess - please advise

I've stayed there. Bit of a hike (though a short one) up hill but I'm sure it is by far the best accommodation in Yeppoon. We had 3bed thing with enormous balcony.

Re: Orthodontist - continuing treatment

Queensland only recently added fluoride to the water, some 20 odd years after most other states.

Re: Would you transfer your £'s to A$...

When I came over back in 2002 I got about $2.80. Of course I sold my house for a huge amount less than it soon became worth under the house price boom.

Swings, roundabouts etc.

Re: Orthodontist - continuing treatment

Re: renting with pets?

Put an anti-bark collar on so it doesn't upset the neighbours and they might not even know it is there.

Rentals here have regular inspections (6 monthly?) but they let you know some time in...

Re: renting with pets?

You'd find it easier to rent with a child murderer than with a dog I suspect.

My landlord accepts dogs. But then they were friends before landlords and are also dog-owners.

So good luck with...

Re: Car Rental Excess - please advise

as someone else said there are travel insurance policies that specifically cover vehicle hire excesses.

However, if you had an accident of some sort you would still have to pay the hire company...

Re: Killing snakes?

It is much riskier to take spade or other implement to a snake than to walk away slowly and calmly.

There is a good chance that if you go for a spade that the snake will end up taking the spade...

Re: 457 to PR

You can apply your judgment to the value of sponsorship but in my opinion it is not worth $60k a year, unless you are really, really desperate to be in Aus and have no other means of doing so.

Re: Leasing, hiring or buying a car

I have leased (novated leased with employer in tr-partite agreement) twice. Both times I saved loads of money on petrol, maintenance etc and made money above the balloon each time I sold the car.

Re: The misers route from Brisbane to Adelaide

Re: How much difference does sun REALLY make to you?

Lots to be honest.

I enjoy going to the beach, but living in Brisbane that means a 1 -1.5 hour trip so I don;t go as often as I might. However, sunny weather is much more than "going to the...

Re: How nasty are whitetails?

Not sure I've ever come across a white tail yet.

Redbacks are one of the few things I will kill; other spiders I will catch and release.

Cockroaches, of course, I will also kill. I find the...
