Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

I'm not sure, but I know they disapprove of backbiting and bullying (which is why a lot of the replies to my thread were deleted).

I apologise if I'm breaking rules by duplicating my post, but as...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

I was being (or rather, trying to be) ironic - I thought Obama was championing the cause for a national health system like ours? (I've watched a bit of Fox news and everyone seems to hate the guy!).

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

I should have clarified that I was just answering the questions someone posed about what we actually want in life; I know not all our boxes will be ticked by Australia (or Canada, or the US...), I...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Your post was very insightful and opened my eyes to a lot of things about Australia of which I wasn't aware... if we do think seriously about moving there it'll have to be after lots of research into...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Not sure about non-EU countries but anyone in the EU can indeed just walk in, no questions asked. I have no idea why they'd want to (apart from the obvious £ incentives) - in the Independent today it...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

You misunderstand me (don't worry, you're not the first :D): I don't hate immigrants and have nothing against them coming here to work if they buy / rent their own house, spend their wages in this...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

TBH I don't know what I want (nor my husband). We're both very indecisive and maybe we want / need someone to peer into our lives and tell us what to do for the best. We're both happy in our new...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

$20k???!!! Jeez, that's around £12k, right? Are you in favour of private healthcare a la Obama, dare I ask...?! I'd give my opinion but I don't have any more Kleenex left for the backlash... :o

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Your post was really helpful and insightful, cheers  I think maybe we're best to wait until a secondment opportunity comes up for my husband with the company for whom he's currently working,...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Do they have a 'bush fire' levy, too?! ;) Well I know we'd never be on the top tax rate - maybe $100k would be our maximum? (£60k?). I know Australia was expensive back in 2004 but I've not been...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

I agree with all your points, and yes I'm looking at a list of PROs and CONS I wrote earlier, as I type this! One of my biggest worries is moving to another country and encountering the same problems...

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Thanks for your informative comments - I haven't looked into the tax system in Oz yet (although one of the posters put some links on this evening which I will endeavour to look at in a few minutes)....

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Ha ha, touche! (don't have accents on my pc but I'm sure you can figure it out ;)). Ah, but Australia has so much more land to fill - we're just a wee dot in the ocean!

Re: POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Thanks, I'll try those. I think Australia's highest tax rate is 37% though, not 50% (or am I thinking of Canada?!).

POSSIBLY CONSIDERING OZ... ?

Well it's been so long since I've last been on here, but most of the same names keep popping up, so it's nice to see people still come on here even once their emigration plans have reached fruition...
