Re: Let's talk about cars

It's a complete joke. I wonder what percentage of drivers here are capable of parallel parking, for example?

In reverse, many Americans who move to the UK complain bitterly about the UK test. I...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Right, only driving directions. The other limitation is that you don't get lane guidance. If by re-routes you mean adjusting your route if you've taken a wrong turn, pretty sure that works offline....

Re: Let's talk about cars

Maps can be cached on Google Maps to do route finding/navigation absent a cell service.

Re: Let's talk about cars

I went through similar reasoning, thinking initially I’d get a plug-in hybrid. But plug-ins by definition need a much bigger battery than a hybrid and, because they also have an ICE, that battery...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Below 20 (?) mph fake engine noise is a legal requirement here for electric vehicles (and hybrids when the gas engine is not running). Silent moving vehicles can be a hazard for pedestrians,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

18% of new car sales in California are zero-emission vehicles (which, bizarrely, includes plugin-hybrids). That's by far the highest percentage for a US state. By comparison, over 75% of new car...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I didn’t realize until the Twitter kerfuffle that Musk didn’t found Tesla. He joined about six months after it was incorporated. He was, however, by far the biggest early investor. Also amusing that...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I still have my ‘99 BMW E46 323i. Effectively a second vehicle now with almost 300k on the clock. It’s been extremely reliable except… the effin window regulators. I think I have had 8 replaced now,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I am not a fan of plugin hybrids as I feel they are the worst of both worlds in the sense that you have both an internal combustion engine _and_ a large battery. That takes space up not only under...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Search for my posts on this thread about my 2020 Honda CRV hybrid. It's 21 months old now. Done a few road trips in western states sleeping in the back of it (that was a primary consideration for...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Well , my BMW 3 Series is now over 23 years old and approaching 300k miles. Yes, repairs (well, parts especially) are very expensive but the car is remarkably reliable still and of course...

Ha yes you’re correct. I’m so used to thinking the other way around. At least I got the combined average right!

Re: Let's talk about cars

Time for a short update on my Honda CRV hybrid. It's now passed 11k miles. Over that period, we've averaged 36.9mpg. EPA says 35 city, 39 highway and given our mix of driving that is likely exactly...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yes, as you pointed out it's a requirement for any Hybrid or electric vehicle from this January (I think) onwards. So you'd better get used to it as a driver or pedestrian...

On my Honda, it makes...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I agree with this. I downshift descending the Sierra Nevada - either east or west and on the aforementioned Grapevine on I-5. Also there are a couple of steep off ramps from freeways in the Bay Area...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Aside from CVTs, you can downshift in an automatic, either through the gear shift or paddle shifters. The fact that most US drivers don't - even, as you say, descending from the Sierra Nevada - is...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yes, but a heat exchanger from exhaust gases requires the gas engine to be running too. I also read that some hybrids have the ability for the "heater core" to retain heat so that there residual...

Re: Let's talk about cars

So back to my Honda CRV hybrid. I am going to presume that the heater is driven solely off the gas engine's cooling system. Because, I can be driving along with the gas engine not running, turn the...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Thanks for all the links. That workaround still works! Plus, unlike the Google Maps App, the car volume control works as I would expect. So I'm still puzzled about Google Maps.

The Economist app...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Ha, that works... partially. I still can't reduce the volume to a level I would prefer. But at least it's a step in the right direction.

So now I'm baffled as to why I can use the car's volume...

Re: Let's talk about cars

For some of us, it's not just about money. It took me a long time to come to the belief that a hybrid was worth considering. What convinced me is twofold. Firstly, they do reduce gas consumption....

Re: Let's talk about cars

That depends on how the electricity is generated. If you live in a state like Colorado with its dirty coal-fired power stations, then certainly there's little advantage. Other states and countries...
