I always used WD40 and a soft cloth, leave the WD40 on for 30 secs or more and polish off, repeat if necessary.
Wash the area after you have got it all off to remove the residue

When I was in the Middle East in the 1980's there was a fleet of 'London Cabs' operating in Jeddah and they were all new left hand drive built with air conditioning.
