Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Personally I'd rather 'work fulltime' to ensure the naive hoards not move here in the first place...I don't want the place full of Fish and Chip Poms...

If you think it's expensive, (and it ain't...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

I'm sure there are cashed up Australians as well as Poms. It's only generalising if we're talking about everyone.

People are sufficiently cashed up around here that in general all the people we...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

I was a closet German-phile even before I lived in a country that sort of shares some of it's culture but also that of France.

Now I marginally prefer France for many reasons but still like...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Demographics at work, as I discovered a few months ago. When I strolled in to a supermarket I had never visited before, it wasn't the prices I noticed - and I probably wouldn't - it was the state of...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Did you come over on the 'pleb package' offered by the government migration programme? Sometimes migrants seem to get the rough deal whatever they do. Luck plays an important part. Probably the best...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

One last thing - if you don't know likely rates in your line of work - find out - and find out fast.

You might be better off trundling your trolley around Asda after all and your other half might...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

With drinks it would be more in dollars but not 1.5 x or 2x perhaps . But many people earn more dollars than pounds so it seems expensive.ie a low income worker on GBP17k might get AUS38k who...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

No money would be painful anywhere so you're missing my point. My point is that lounging around on a beach whilst boring might keep the kids occupied in ways that a civic centre or windy park might...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Know where you are coming from, looking at it in real terms. No money = misery.

But as a backpacker with a lot of cash but in no hurry to spend it, it was easier to lounge around on Sydney's...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Well I lived so far out of London it was practically Surrey - down the river.

We weren't hows your father Cockneys but we was still London.

In Australian terms, I reckon anywhere within an hour...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

How do you account for people complaining about low Australian wages? Is there a disconnect somewhere?

Apart from people paid in GBP of course - but most people have never got this point in 6...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

In economic terms, some things are just inelastic for some consumers.

In Australia, I think some things are just plain marked up - well beyond their equilibrium.

But people still buy them...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

It's a pisser. Because many years ago Brits used the cheapish housing to subsidise other areas.

I've said it before - I actually wonder - right now - why people bother. I find it hard to...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

I think some things are marked up here without a doubt, before you take into account personal measures of expense - but whether you think it is expensive to live here depends largely on demographics...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

hmm...again personally I would consider that about parity - worst case for me.

Actual - far cheaper in Australia.

It depends on income of course.

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Sounds more like it. c1000 seemed well too high and I was inclined to take the cheaper. At this new price, and at a good UK salary, (I've deliberately doubled my last UK income to allow for...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

At those prices, and on my salary I can categorically say they are a lot cheaper in Australia. In unit terms, I earn 2-5 times my UK salary - therefore looking at both ends of this earning scale to...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Indeed. My 5bhp Tornado was just over 500 bucks 6 years ago.

Someone tell me what they are now!

On paying out for expensive things - what's a good Bosch frontloader cost in GBP. Ours was c...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

I got Toyos all round on a 4x4 ute for c. 600.
My wife got her falcon reshod on Yokohomos for about 400.

It's all variable - my car insurance in Australia is in dollars what I paid in pounds.

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Yes I agree. Huge savings. And you will probably earn more dollars than quids too so rather than save half, it might represent a saving of 4 times... I'm convinced people are so busy looking at what...

Re: Is Australia really THAT expensive?

Depends how many dollars you earn and what your fixed costs are. I earn a reasonable salry and my mortgage is less than 1/7th of my net income. At those proportions, life gets rosy.

I find it OK -...
