Re: Let's talk about cars

There was a time during the 50's and 60's when traffic engineers were experimenting with left-lane on- and off-ramps, based on the theory that they would allow traffic to move faster. But they have...

Re: Let's talk about cars

For the most part, wagons have been replaced by CUVs. Have a look at the CR-V and RAV-4 if the Subarus don't appeal to you.

Re: Let's talk about cars

The last thing that I need is a car that requires flossing and fluoride, and that can get cavities.

Re: Let's talk about cars

When Ford takes it profits and uses them to build a factory in Mexico, then that money is going to Mexico.

When Honda takes it profits to expand production in Ohio, then that money is going to the...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Most of the money spent on new cars is paying for parts and labor, in that order. Relatively small amounts contribute to R&D and to corporate overhead.

Automakers then take some of the money...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Japan has a rigorous inspection system that is designed to spur new car sales. As a result, there isn't much of a used car market, and a lot of used cars get exported.

A lot of those cars end up...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Every car is compromised. There isn't a single vehicle on the road that can do everything.

As it turns out, the 305-horsepower and 280-pound-feet of torque 3.7-liter V6 Mustang is built with a...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The V6 Mustang has more than 300 horsepower and a top speed of more than 110 mph, a speed that will get your license revoked in most states. The car has a 0-60 time in the low 5-second range and a...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The most recent V6 Mustang is a leap above the previous ones. The new one is a credible performer.

But the speed governor is there for a reason, namely that the motor produces more torque than...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Well, I would hope not. There hasn't been a Falcon in the US for almost fifty years.

It's not a question of horsepower, but of style and displacement.

A Bugatti Veyron has over 1,000...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The Mustang is a pony car. The original pony car concept was a compact (by the definition of the day) family sedan chassis with a coupe body attached to it, i.e. it was more about styling and...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I'm confused: the same guy who derided the HHR for its ungainly looks is now considering a Juke?

The Juke looks like a frog after it lost a fight. It could drive like a Ferrari, and I'd still...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The second part explains the first. Many HHRs had rental car agencies as their first owners.

The HHR and PT Cruiser were both designed to match the EPA's definition of a "truck" for compliance...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The HHR was designed by the designer of the PT Cruiser, but there are no shared parts.

The HHR was GM's attempt to attract buyers of the PT Cruiser, some time after consumers had already lost...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The obvious solution is to spend $20,000 so that you have a garage large enough to hold your $5,000 car.

Whatever you do, don't buy a $1,000 car:

Re: Let's talk about cars

Have you tired of the Panther platform? You could get a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. (I personally don't care much for them, but they're easy to fix and hold up reasonably well to abuse.)

Re: Let's talk about cars

The great thing about buying a used Buick is that there are plenty of low mileage examples. And if the car is for occasional use, then I would much rather have a Buick driven by Grandma for 30,000...

Re: Let's talk about cars

For an occasional use backup car, I'd be inclined to buy a used old Buick, most specifically from a retiree who didn't drive it much. You'll get more car for the money, albeit it won't have the...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I should have provided a better link. That crash ended up involving 130 cars. Amazingly, though, no fatalities at all.
