I believe in more recent times that landlords and letting agencies are covering their backs financially when it comes to renting out properties. The agent we used when securing a flat in London...

We had the same problem when returning from a year of backpacking. I provided the agency with my partners work contract detailing salary and also a separate print out of our savings account...
